Who's doing this lazy coding?

Postby FunkOff » 08 Apr 2013, 00:59

You can't just take off the charge time of the oblivion guns and call this a "fix" for the Aeon destroyer/T2 PD/Battleship. First of all, it looks ridiculous, the gun still charges, but only after it fires. Second, that charge time was there for a good balance reason.

Either figure out how to fix it properly by making the weapons aim during charging, or just admit you broke something to give Aeon an unfair advantage.

The charge time is still there, it's just reduced. And unfair advantage for properly shooting in the right direction? I don't think it's unfair at all. The shots can still be dodged, they are not lightning fast. They are just shot properly now.

This issue has been around for as long as I know. Nobody fixed it. It may not be the cleanest looking fix but it works. You can also blame GPG for adding tracking to Sera T3 Anti-air projectile that curves because it tracks : it's lazy coding too, it looks ugly, but it works. Gameplay is superior to looks.
Though, I will have a look at the charging fx duration, (and also the sound, which I completely forgot cause i tested without sound on) maybe it can be shortened and the fix will be less "lazy" ;-)

But again, you got a better way? just provide it.

Aeon don't have an unfair advantage in navy at all. To provide an example of my point in as little words as possible: who plays Aeon from Rock or Beach on Seton's? The Aeon destroyer has been frustrating to use in the past because when you'd turn the things, they'd miss one or two shots. The destroyers were only effective moving in a straight line to their targets, and if they'd get flanked or approached from behind, they'd usually get destroyed. I hated playing against Cybran navy. After all this time, Aeon navy might actually be viable, if you forget for a second that the T2 subs aren't great, the Battleships are outclassed by the UEF, Cybran, and Seraphim Battleships, and the Cruisers have the worst ship-to-ground and ship-to-ship weapon of any of the faction's Cruisers.

Yes, please give a try to Aeon navy and see if it's more competitive. The Batttleship and Tempest are also greatly improved. If the fix works well, the cosmetics can be improved later, it's secondary.

But don't Aeon cruisers have TMD?
I played a game where I played Rock and fought against an Aeon navy assaulting my coast.
Tons of cruisers meant I couldn't just 1-shot cruisers, destroyers and battleships with a battery of TMLs.
If it was any other navy, I could have just devoted resources to my TMLs and thrashed a navy bombarding my coast 1 ship at a time.
Artillery certainly doesn't have the raw damage.

Plus Aeon destroyer fire has good AoE right?
That's like risking your build capacity if you're trying to get up shields on the front line.

To me, Aeon navy is actually pretty scary in the hands of a good player.

Aeon navy imba? Really? - no way!
Cruisers: decent aa thats all.
Destroyers: one shot every 6 years and this shot is missing everything that moves
Battleship: just fail
Tempest: ok but mutch to static to be really usefull
Missleships: good for bombardement/ long range engaging but not reliable for navy fight.
The only thing what makes aeon not lose horribly to other navy is the hover stuff they have.

Despite the look, the Aeon Destroyer projectile has no more AOE than any other : it's 1 for Cybran, UEF, Aeon and even Sera.

I don't think Funk is complaining about what was changed, but HOW it was changed. I agree with him: If you are going to fix a bug or change something, anything, then do it properly, and give it some care, love, and polish. Don't just do things half-assed. If the change makes things look wrong, then don't release it.

Check this out and tell me how many naval ships with Oblivion cannons shot behind or completely off.

The trend is to change everything recently and call this a bug fix so it sounds unquestionable.

I think coders are doing an amaizing job in general, but now it's really taking more and more freedom without realising all the indirect consequences.
I really think the game should pause the balance 4 or 5 months without any balance or even "bug fix" change so people will be surprised to realise some units are now a must do, and some new strategies would emmerge.

Your building a new house over an unfinished house, this is dangerous.
