Egotism

Postby Badsearcher » 11 Mar 2013, 19:10

I have notice on FA that there are quite a few people who are totally incompetent but when they are confronted about their incompetence (especially by their teammates who are losing because a certain player isn't doing their job) they aren't apologetic and receptive of constructive criticism but rather they just lash out insultingly and never admit that they did any wrong.

How do you deal with a player like this? It doesn't seem like you can rely on their empathy for their teammates because they don't seem to have any and you can't convince them of their responsibility for their failures because they don't take responsibility. So, what are you supposed to do when one of your allies doesn't do their job and it's obvious it's going to cost your team the whole game and when you tell them to shape up quickly, they just give you some insulting response in reply and persist in not doing their job?

Also, just on a more philosophical note, how are you supposed to be patient with people who never take responsibility?

I think the main issue I experience is egotism from the self perceived "more experienced" players. The players where rating means everything, they will unwittingly lash out at the "lesser ability players" with mean comments, calling them a noob as if it's an insult.

I haven't come across a single lesser skilled player who has been given calm constructive critique and responded in the manner to which you described, I am only seeing them being critiqued in a harsh and nonconstructive way. People usually shout at them saying "It's all your fault we lost you noob, you don't have enough air up" "Where's my fucking air cover you idiot".

Anyway, you made a valid point, but what precisely is it we can do about these topics? People have too big of an ego on this game, especially the self proclaimed "great players." And no, I'm not on about the guys who compete in regular tournaments, from what I've seen they're pretty alright, I'm just on about your average joe playing the game.

Maybe not using the word "incompetent" will help in the process of guiding them to play better.

Alright, come on now, I'm not naming names.

Also, pilot, that's a good point, but I usually never start off with a personal attack. It's more like I am playing front position on setons and then I see beach player with ZERO navy and when I plead with them to do their job they will personally insult me, and then moments later when the cruise missiles start to rain down on the frontlines he will insult me for not playing front properly, and then start building a fatboy with one t3 engineer. If at that point I throw the word incompetence out there, I don't apologize for it.

playing with very low players outside of training makes nearly everybody having more or less silent thunderstorms above his head (think of comics)
and if somebody is doing heavy shit (and that happens) i tell him that he is doing heavy shit and why, i dont see this as arrogance, if nobody tells him, he cant learn it (ofc you SHOULD be nice)

This thread could easily be about me. I am that incompetent n00b. I have been raged at for not doing when job when I didn't know what that job is, there was no team plan worked out before hand so how should I know? I mostly play 1v1s because I am hardcore ( ) but occasionally I go into the odd team game for the crazyness it offers and it is kinda annoying the way everyone assumes because of your number of games and your rating (not so much in my case) that you know exactly what you are supposed to do. The most annoying is when you are abused afterwards rather than ppl telling you at the time that you are doing it wrong.

Flynn, seriously, it's not about being raged for not knowing what you are supposed to be doing (although, when you look at setons, the bare minimum should be kind of obvious).

This thread is about the person who when they are criticized they'll just say, 'you whine a lot, I'm building mavor, nub'.
