Lack of new-comers/new-comer support.

Postby asdfmovie » 06 Mar 2013, 12:51

Its right on the topic name.

But really, don't you find it a little disorientating to have more experienced ( golden oldies ) players outnumber the new arrivals. Go through the chat and you'll find the disparity astonishing. Sure some of these new influx may be ancient FA gods from the age of GPGnet but still , i find there isn't much support for the new guys.

SOME, not all mind you, SOME members of the FAF community are not really helping by ejecting lower ranked players from games or stacking games. As one new player ( who shall not be named ) has said before. There is no middle ground in FAF , you are either a noob or a pro.

I know that rating isn't everything but that is like saying a resume isn't everything when you apply for a job. The prime part of a player/employee skill comes from rating/resume. Which makes it unpleasant for bronze newbies to gain in experience by losing game after game to people quadruple their skill level ( eg. no hope )

I propose that new players ( rating from negative-800 ) interact with each other separately from the golden oldies ( 800-whatever). Games hosted by golden oldies and bronze newbies are unjoinable by players of different class. Granted, people WILL get stomped in newbie games but it won't be guaranteed nor will it be disturbingly fast ( hopefully ). Once a player has passed the rating threshold, they are free to participate in golden oldie games since they should have a fair amount of experience with FA multi now.

Thanks for reading this wall of text. I hope it makes some sense. Maybe. Or i could be delusional....

Sheppard (about joining games) wrote: Note that you will probably be kicked from the game if you ignore the restrictions mentioned in the game titel.

also, if you think the game is stacked nobody forces you to play with them, you can host your own game

i cant see your point at all

It's up to the player that host to defined what kind of players he wants in his game.

Having a clear restriction on rating is not something I want : It's a tool to check if the game has a chance to be balanced or not, not an absolute truth.
An automated system will never beat an human brain.

nobody will kick you for having +/- 100/200 or something, but i have plenty of U1000 players complaining about beeing kicked from "be good" or "1700+" games and say thats retarded by the good players :o wtf

a game where one player on each side gets steamrolled at minute 6 is not a really good one

I'm pretty sure the same player will find "retarded" that Zock join a under 1000 game too.

Sheppard you really don't have to be abrasive the entire time.

I have to admit it's pretty difficult as a newbie to this game, not only is it a difficult and unforgiving game to learn, when you start you are constantly roflstomped by more experienced players. Unfortunately it's at least partly down to a relatively slow intake of fresh newbies who can play against other newbies.

For your first ranked games I don't think you should be matched with anyone >1000, it's just disheartening.

There's quite a bit of useful intro/tutorials available but they aren't entirely laid out in an easy to find and accessible way. I can't really suggest what I would change but I feel that ultimately the maintenance of this community is driven by getting new players and fostering their growth to get into the game.

RE:Getting kicked from games I think this is fine. Playing in games with players who aren't your skill level usually involves ruining the game for all players involved. Low ranked players should play with each other and kick higher players, and vice-versa.

I know, but it's the same relatively speaking. I don't see what's wrong in 1700+ players kicking U1000 players from their games.

By the way, there are way more noobs than experienced players, I don't know why you get the opposite idea.

The problem is that they play thermo or VS AI only.

I'm still working on the walkthrough tutorial for the wiki, but this will take some time. It will be finished in a month at best.
