Remove matchmaker after certain # of games.

Postby Anaryl » 07 Feb 2013, 07:41

I was thinking the other day that we should remove the matchmaker after a certain game count.

In case you don't know, in the 1v1 automatch, the autofinder will limit your search to a certain band of players around your rating.

I propose that after a certain number of games, this restriction be lifted, as I believe you no longer need any "protection" from the big baddies lurking on the ladder.

This will be beneficial as it will create more matches, and allow highly experienced players who may not have as high a rating as some on the ladders to still get challenging games.

I propose you could put this threshold anywhere between 500 - 1000 games. obviously this figure could be debated or adjusted.

Hey..
ok then let us remove the rating after certain games as well ...
or why do we need that in that case???

for some people like me its 90% clear that they will maybe never be as good as people over 1800 ... I like to play with players around my rating (~1400 rating / ~700 games). There I have a real chance without having to invest my whole free time to train micro, special strategys and efficiency ...
If I would have to play every day against >2k people ... maybe I'm not the only one who thinks to quit 1vs1 then ...

I can imagine that its hard for the small amount of >1800 people to find every here and there an opponent, and this can help "you" - but this shouldnt be the solution. my opinion ...

maybe think again about a lobby tweak - that players searching 1vs1 will be shown at the automatchmaker field (not their name; only rating). Maybe that attracts more players to click on autmatch as it was often suggested...

or think about daily awards like:
- win 10 1on1s today and earn a special avatar

or think about a score board implementation:
earn points for something you do - an increasing number that shows your experience on faf and statsboard where player can see for example - anaryl played 10 times thermo and lost *g* or something ... or won 10 games on nomads ... won 10 games against >2k rated players.

hf gl
ranking :
~1500 global / ~1100 ladder
~1100 games / ~ 400 games

This goes both way. I don't want new players to play top players because "their restrictions are lifted".

Also, it's not because you've played 500 games that you are able to remotely compete with Luxun.

Displaying who is searching can have the opposite effect :
"ho, nobody is searching, no need to try", or "Oh god I fought that guy 2 times already, I won't search again !"

Perhaps it would be nice to have the option for each player to over-ride the default if they wish?

I'm not sure exactly what the true figures are, but say for the sake of argument that currently the matchmaker will try to find somebody within 100 points for 30 seconds, then will try to find somebody within 200 points for the next 30 seconds, and so on. If it's easy to implement, it would be nice to have the option to search within say 500 points to begin with.

Many of my games are against lower-rated opponents, and I worry that this means my rating will never get significantly higher. If I had the option to play higher-risk games then I would certainly give it a go.

SEARCH_RADIUS_INCREMENT = 0.05
SEARCH_RADIUS_MAX = 0.25

In the lobby.

The server, by default, is going for trying to find a match balanced at minimum 80%.
Then, every 10 seconds, it's reduced by 5%, with a maximum of 25%.

So, the actual search range goes from 80% down to 55%. Under that, it's hardly balanced (basically match up with the first guy around), so it won't go lower.

If you are matched against low-ranked players, it's because they are nobody closer to their rank, and nobody closer to yours.
So expanding the range to 55% directly will just make you play more matches against low ranked players, and not higher ones. Because there are not much of them.

Even if it works, these higher ranked players will have the same feeling "ho, I'm matched against a noob again !"

The problem is that there are more "noobs" than "pro" on FAF, unlike some people tends to believe.
And the high ranked players barely play the ladder at all.

If they are highly experienced why don't they have a high rating? If they aren't very good, just very experienced then the games at there current rating should be challenging no?

I think we are complicating it too much. The ladder matchmaking is good as it is imho.

On the other hand I share (once again, yet unheard) my idea of helping ladder search:

- A sort of traffic light RED/GREEN under the race symbols which indicates if anyone is searching.

It is good , because it's anonymous. It would get people to press that button more frequently if you know that a player is ready.

I enter in the host page , see a green light for ladder (we could differentiate, if possible, scout t1 t2 t3 xp "lanterns" )

You all know that the hosts getting people are the ones which already have 5/6 or 3/4 players , not the ones with 1/5 players.
That's because people is lazy, don't want to wait.

So that would push people to ladder, I suppose.

And nobody will press it if it's red.
