Why did you come to SupCom from TA?

Postby Flynn » 22 Jan 2013, 00:36

One of the main reasons I bought SupCom was because I wanted to play a game that was still officially supported. In 2007 my hardware wouldn't run it at all well so I lost interest in it, until now I have a laptop that can just about play it so I have got back into it as a result of seeing it on Steam for an insultingly low price. I was utterly shocked to come back at Christmas and see the community in tatters. The game just came out a few years ago FFS  If I wanted to play a game that had no official support I would have stuck with TA or one of it's hundreds of mods or TA Spring. Anyway if it wasn't for FAF I would have wasted my money on a great game but no one to play it with. I find it really weird the way the bastards have cut off support for it so soon. A lot of it is politics which I never understand.

The contract with THQ ran out so they dropped it off their servers. Neither them or GPG were going to fork out for a 5 year old game after that.

Five years is not old either you pedant :x Are you always this cynical or just the wrong time of the month? Why doesn't other games contracts run out then? What about Starcraft's contract, why hasn't that run out? Stop talking gibberish for a change :|

5 years and a tiny community... that is old. Stop thinking about your favourite game for just one second and look at the problem from THQs perspective:

They have a contract to provide game servers to Supreme Commander for 5 years.
Sales drop to next to nothing
Community size drops to nothing
The contract runs out.

Do they a) continue to run servers at expense to themselves to help a small community of gamers, or b) stop the server because they have no obligation to leave it on and it is costing them money.

Why on earth should they continue to support it? Are you actually trying to tell me that you think they made a bad decision from a business perspective?

^^ I choose 'b'. Of course that is from a business stand point.

Personally, I'm am so glad to have a community like FAF with supporters like you all to keep this wonderful game alive. If it wasn't for Zep and the rest of these awesome admins/tech savvy folk, i'd be out of a game too :(

It's always the publishers that screw up a community :x How can sales drop to next to nothing for such an amazing game! I remember that there were 1000s of players on GPGNet, where did they go? Besides why do CT games always have to go the way of the dogs it is so annoying! I came to SupCom from TA because I wanted the benefits of a fully supported game, at this rate I might of well have continued playing TA :|

Iff you think TA is better supported then feel free to go bsck there...

You can't say it was the publisher screwing us over when ultimately it was us the community that failed to provide the support in terms of community size and competitive action necessary for THQ to be worth investing in more server time

Both of you, calm your tits.

FAF is the community saying 'we're not just going to whine, we're going to revitalize this awesome, massively underrated gem of a game'. As far as I'm concerned this makes FAF freaking AWESOME.

Flynn I really don't get your point here :

We all know SupCom was not a success in terms of sales compared to C&C or Starcraft , less appealing overall, harder, hard-demanding hardware, less advertised and so on.

BUT

If we go back to 2007 we had success games like Warhammer 40'000 Dark Crusade , World in Conflict , C&C 3 !!!
Where are them NOW ???? What is their multi scene offering ??? THEY ARE DEAD !!! Of course they' ll have some diehard fans but nothing more.

6 years IS actually old. VERY OLD. The only exceptions I remember here for RTS are Starcraft and CoH which truly are the most succesfull brands in rts maybe

I find quite obvious that FA is no more supported , and even if our game is often sold at few bucks it doesn't sell a lot. It was not that famous years ago , why people should "bother" buying it now. People want fresh games. People doenst' like RTS like years ago. MOBAS captured the attention of hundreds of thousands of players ... Kids play fps , shooters , sims ...

we are a niche .. live with it :P
lately we are having 600 users online in the european evenings... I would be already happy if we could keep those numbers , but they can increase further with the advent of Galactic War :)

AH... last example .... Sins of a solar empire Rebellion .... out in 2012 .... a good & wellknown rts brand ..... well you have three four matches going on a the same time...no more... so why do we complain....we are fine this way :))

I've already payed my tributes to FAF. But it makes me angry that there is only 1 community for such a great game :x However, I have noticed an increase in users, for instance there were 600 yesterday, let's try to get that up to 1000.

The point I want to address in your post is that you say 6 years is old. Maybe for some games, not for SupCom. As we all know, SupCom was built WAY ahead of it's time. Such was the forward vision of Chris Taylor, that, only now are we seeing rigs capable of exploiting SupCom to it's true potential. Don't forget, a lot of us are playing SupCom on out of date/low spec computers, so when those of us have the money to spend on a new rig it will give SupCom a new lease of life to us. For example, my laptop struggles to run the game on most bigger maps and it will be at least two years before I can invest in a new system. That is going to be like a rebirth for SupCom for me, two years from now.

Your other point about people wanting new games. I do not understand that mentality. If it wasn't for SupCom TA should still be my "go to" RTS. I want a game that can last infinitely; that is what Chris Taylor's RTS games provide. The depth of SupCom's surface has only just been scratched. On top of that I still don't consider 2007 to be "years ago".

Don't forget, SupCom is on Steam as well which pretty much gurantees more players. If they are too dumb to understand SupCom then we don't want they anyway.
