How to reach starcraft players?

Postby SeraphimLeftNut » 16 Jan 2013, 20:10

They are different games, but..

It is safe to say that out of the players who enjoy competitive strategy on pc at least 9/10 are playing starcraft 2. There are many reasons, including excellent marketing and historical greatness of the title "starcraft".(not dragged through the mud like "supreme commander")
There are many potential Supcom FA players among these players, who never heard of supreme commander, and those that have, have a firm belief that there isn't another RTS game that comes close to SC2.

Question: How do we reach these people? Think of ideas and post them here.

One possible tool suggested in chat:
An OBJECTIVE list of pro's and con's of each game. A list of things you can do in Supcom FA that you cannot do in starcraft, but always wanted. Also list advantages of starcraft over Supcom FA (actual gameplay, not just the fact that there are 500k starcraft players)

To do this will take players who have a good understanding of both games. Think about differences in unit control, resource generation, advancement through tech stages, types of resources, effect of time, etc.

If you feel like you are able to do this, reply in this thread with your thoughts. Based on how much information we are able to gather, perhaps we could create a video going through these differences.

IMO, the only thing that FA will have more appealing than Starcraft is Galactic War.

i think making a video of the very basics with some easy drawings (to show for example tech), which includes a simple explaination of the strategic zoom, the flux eco (seeng buildings beeing built by engies), using transports to drop engineers and bombing some enemy units in <3min of the game would be a good start

I watched a number of pro replays of SC2 and have a good idea of the strategy's involved. Drop play for example is an often used strategy in Starcraft 2 and so is the building of a bunker+marines in front of the enemy's base in < 3 min. So these things do not differentiate SCFA from SC2.

I think the biggest problem of getting people to try SCFA is the overwhelming amount of units and the tech tree (which is awesome of course :), but for people who don't know the game it looks too complicated. They try to play the first 10 games and get overwhelmed by the amount of build options. It takes a long time to figure out this game and an even longer time before you can get your first wins. Therefore, I think we should provide more tutorials and (being a noob myself) newbie friendly matches to get people beyond that first hurdle.

I'd say that emphasis should be made on what distinguishes Supcom FA from SC2 and arguably makes it superior.

Yes there are lots of units, but there are tools that help you manage everything, like the strategic zoom, build templates and infinite queues.

It's at a completely different scale than Starcraft.

Strategic zoom and flexible waypoints mean that the scale of the game can be managed.

The number of options available at all times is really staggering. The fact that you're gunning for just one target as opposed to trying to wipe out the entire enemy army means that a smart player who knows what they're doing can pull a victory through overwhelming odds, like in this game: http://youtu.be/UPxSw37c_Yw

Giant robots, LAZORS and nukes that actually feel like nukes. 'Nuff said.

It's dirt cheap.

I'm sure someone with more experience playing both FA and SC2 could come up with a better list than me.

Also, as a side comment, while the enthusiasm is commendable I think some forum threads that get hijacked by a swarm of fans who create accounts just to try promoting FAF actually scare people off. Just saying.

A very important message to convey: 'ignore SupCom2, FA is way better'. People who only played SupCom2 will not be inclinded to check out FA.

To attract Star Craft players follow these simple steps.

Take star craft 1.... Call it star craft 2.
