CPU Quality Inidicator

Postby pukster » 13 Nov 2012, 21:48

Is there any chance of incorporating some measure of user's CPU quality? About 20% of the games lag severely, and this usually results in people yelling at you at how it's not lag but technically a bottleneck. Could we maybe keep a history of how often a user acts as a bottle neck, and display that along side the ping?

I think that not only is this a difficult thing to implement in the fashion you suggest, but also an incredibly bad idea in the first place. Just thinking of how much this would feed elitist snobs makes me shudder.

What about this? ;)

if player A in team 2 has -4 speed... team 2 players B, C and D should have the option to kick him if he don't want to leave by himself.
team 1 will not be able to kick him...

is that possible? An automatic connection popup + kick option, if a players game speed is slow?

in some situations it will make sense in some other not (e.g. share until death) ...

this is easy to implement, you just need to run some kind of benchmark when faf is starting.
this topic came up a few weeks ago and nothing happened. most likely it will not be done.

Easy to implement?

It's practically impossible to implement well. Do you even know what you're asking? You're asking to max-out people's CPU every time they join FAF. Just imagine that for a second. You're sitting at your PC, you might need to relog, if you like me, you are listening to music, surfing the web, maybe watching video as well. All of a sudden this tiny little client decides it wants to max out your processor. Does that seem appropriate given the scope of the application ( a low footprint irc and matchmaking client that rarely uses more than 70mb of RAM) ? Heaven forfend you use your machine to work as well, because all I want is for some tiny Python app to start eating my resources whilst I have a couple of VMs open. Heaven forfend someone wants to chat and render at the same time.

Now let's think about how long you're going to have to max out the CPU and the tests you need to run in order to even get a decent benchmark. There's a reason most benchmarks run for 7 or 8 minutes.

Now how big would the benchmark have to be in terms of the size of FAF. Right now FAF is under 30 megs, but sure why not just duct tape a benchmarking suite on the side, just, coz.

Also I'm running an 3930, and 3d mark benches my machine around P8100. If you want benchmarks, just post them in the forums.

it would be great if people could tell their cons / pros instead of saying "no" :)

Apart from the technical aspects... Why exactly isn't it good for the game?
please write down your cons ... (no feelings)

I followed the thread rootbeer mentioned some weeks ago as well...
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1857

the main idea was to filter people "before" a game starts ...
no one talked about a filter "after" the game started...

I mean, if people would be able to kick someone in THEIR OWN team for example in the first 15 minutes because he got a simspeed of -5 - where are the cons exactly?
It is clear that I would think twice about kicking my mate if I play a 2vs2 ... but bad simspeed happens more often at >6 player games...

In most cases people can play 4vs4 for around 10 minutes... after that the simspeed decreases significantly...

ZeP was as well for an implementation of this ...(I don't know if he changed his view on this now?!)

noobymcnoobcake wrote:I think a better option would be a vote kick menu (like disconnect menu) when a computer falls below -2 sim. Guy who gets kicked stuff is given to team and game can carry on at normal speed because everyone else's computer is at +3

The reason this is a better idea is it will stop the super computer only guys that stop people joining even 1v1 game with computer that cant run it at +7

noobcake had the same idea like me earlier -.- ...

I still think its an idea one should think more about than just saying "no" to ...

Yesterday I played a 3vs3 - after 10 minutes one guy had -5 simspeed. It was terrible...
You search years for players, than it takes ages to get connection to all and after 10 minutes the game is broken because of one guy... yippie :(

Regarding the "benchmark" ... The benchmark should run ONCE, the result will be set into your account until your setup is changed or at regular intervals. Everytime the benchmark starts you get an info about it, that you should close all other application ... a later single player map with lots of units could be the benchmark or not?
