I've asked Chris Taylor about FAF sources

Postby dragonite » 21 Jan 2020, 18:04

Recently I had talk to FAF game designer Chris Taylor. And I've asked him about the most important question that we all have.

Have people already tried to establish contact with Square Enix? Pretty sure they haven't forgotten about the game in some departments bc there are regular sales on steam. Also I don't think there is any revolutionary code in FA that might be worth withholding anymore. Only problem is people would be able to bypass DRM with it. Guess it was Square Enix that caused the steam link for faf? They only profit from the Project in increased sales. But just the internal working hours to release the Code might not be worth the increased sales. :(

We could always do a crowdfunding to gather a sum that would be worth it for them.

You're likely taking about hundreds of thousands of dollars. That's not even including the Intellectual property, which is probably more.

We do this talk every month fellas, but you're not going to be able to negotiate a deal that may or may not net any value, as our already sparse developer group may not have the skills to just "fix the pathfinding" or "fix the sim speed" like you all dream about.

It's sad, but you're playing a decades old game now, so you need to accept that it is going to be weak in that area.

If you ask me, what's worth crowdfunding is getting some more people with the right skillset to
- develop the client to an acceptable standard
- implement or help implement team matchmaker
- implement or help implement galactic war

Something that can actually fix the leaking holes in FAF's player retention and user experience and hopefully postpone the game's inevitable demise. Instead of hoping the 2 or 3 volunteers can suddenly learn how to hack into a game engine and fix major techincal flaws that a professional team and millions of dollars in budget could not.

Well yes, but no.
FAF sits in a massive legal grey area and in short: we're not shut down because the client helps continue to drive sales of the game.
Unless everyone is using pirated accounts, which means we're no longer doing that. and then SE has no real reason not to crush this misuse of their property.
The steamlink is legal evidence that we continue to help sell copies.

And since that source code could probably create a method to pirate the game, a crowdfunding to buy it would result in us shooting ourselves in the foot. This is so sad.

Biass already explained the situation pretty well already. But I'd like to add: Visionik actually tried that (he had a contact and he was willing to pay a lot of money) and it didn't work out. I don't know why (you can try to ask him), but I don't think we can make it any better.

GPG removed DRM in last patch.

Getting the code isn't a problem, using it is.
