Promotions Councillor Applications

Postby FtXCommando » 18 Sep 2018, 06:26

As some of you are already aware, JJ has decided to step down from his position on the Council in order to focus on other areas of his life. We wish him all the best and appreciate everything he put into FAF. However, his departure also signals the need for a new election for his seat!

While there is no concrete date for when voting will happen for the Promotions Councillor seat, that doesn’t mean people can’t present their desire to run for the position. While candidates explain their objectives and answer questions, the Council will be discussing the logistics of the actual election and the way that voting will proceed. I’ll update the OP as well as make a new post once information is finalized.

So, if you wish to apply, please state (at a minimum) the following information below in a forum post:

- Your FAF Username
- Your conception of the role of Promotions Councillor
- What you plan on doing as Promotions Councillor
- Any skills/experience that prove you are capable for the role
- A pledge (can be an individual one or just the general Promotions Councillor one)

Councillors may come in and ask their own individual questions about candidates. Anything that officially comes from the Council as a whole will either be posted by me in this thread and clearly mentioned as such or by Sheeo.

I expect some solid applications! After all, if you can’t promote yourself, how can you promote FAF?

Good luck to all that apply.

I consider myself a decent addict of FAF. I enjoy the game. I have a calm personality most of the time. I often would wish almost all my friends could play FAF and be into it. I don't mind advertising and promoting FAF on my free time. It's a fantastic game with a rather spicy and colorful community as well. I would like to see more people involved. I wish people knew just how much the game offered them. Few games I would want to play competitively but you can do that with FAF and still enjoy it a lot. I wish to spread this message to more people and promote the game. I'm a good communicator I make things simple and I'm honest.

Postby moonbearonmeth » 18 Sep 2018, 18:28

As of the time of writing this my name is ooo_oooo_o_o_--- but most of you know me as Moonbearonmeth

For the past 1.3 years I saw this councilor role squandered, delegated to little more than what seemed to an elected rubber stamper. Information would come in, be approved by the councilor and publicised with little more than a glance (and even then with such an efficient work method I still had better luck getting things promoted by doing it myself or contacting a tech savvy moderator). However the time of this councilor is over and the time to elect a new one is now and as such I will be entering the elections for the new promotions councilor.

There are a few key aspects that make up what promotion is, what your information is, who is this information relevant to, where does it need to go, why bother with this information (just to round off the four W's) and how to go about releasing this information.
The first four are simple enough that a monkey on anabolic steroids could probably identify and deal with them:
What? The information that needs to be promoted, lets take my weekly column 'This Week in Slack' for example.
Who? Probably not to the people browsing the My Little Pony Sub-Reddit
Where? Probably not to the My Little Pony Sub-Reddit
Why? This deals with is the information important enough to be released in the first place continuing with the This Week in Slack example I should probably not include in the column about how Sheeo waxes his ass hairs.
This leaves the How and the How is what separates a promotions councilor from a roided up ape. A good promotions councilor is able to take the context of the previous four questions and shape the information so that it is tailored to the people that will see it so that it appeals to them. And this is where the FAF community and I come in.

There are two distinct traits that mark about 95% of the FAF community and people who are likely to join the FAF community, they are young men and they like to have fun.
So how does one appeal to young men that like to have fun? The short answer: memes. The key to promoting content to this demographic is memes and the reason we haven't caught on to this sooner is this daft belief that we have to act professional like we're some kind of company that beholden to share holders that are so old and saggy that their man-boobs touch the water in the toilet bowl when they go to take a shit. We need to embrace what we are and we need a promotions councilor that is meme savvy enough to do it.

With all that being said I pledge to...
-Be dank as f***
-Spend at least 4 hours a week being dank
-Have my door always open to any and all that wish to have their memes and non-memes heard
-Chill out in the dev calls (like I already do)
-Promote FAF memes both within FAF and to the great wide world
... and that should the time come where I am old and grey and my memes have lost their spice to make way for a newer and younger memelord

Vote for Moon because a vote for Moon is a vote for memes

Re: Promotions Councillor Applications

Postby JJ173 » 18 Sep 2018, 23:53

First off, for those of you who are wondering why I stepped down, I'll explain it here so you're all aware. Unfortunately, over time, FAF was becoming more of a "silent project" for me, and I took a break from the service. During that time, I started applying for jobs and worked my way through interviews to find myself employed as a Junior Software Engineer. I kept the council informed of this recent development, and discussed the matter as necessary. After time passed, a consensus was made that due to my lack of time, I would step down and give someone else a chance to take on the duties of promotion, and perhaps do a better job at it than I.

I do however, wish to add my two cents on this application process, as the successful applicant will be taking my chair from me. I have read both applications that have been put on so far. Unfortunately, I do have to challenge some points raised in Moon's post.

During my time as promotion councillor, he and I rarely communicated, and if we did, it wasn't really about promotion ( could be my bad memory, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong ). So his statement about having to go through moderators to seek promotion because of my lack of interest wasn't really true. It seemed to me that he would prefer to ask a moderator over me. I do recall one time where Moon asked me to promote some of his "FAF Content" which wasn't really SFW or relevant to FAF at all. To keep it clear, he created a Pornhub channel, and thought it was okay to promote it on the forums in his signature until he was asked to take it off. Now for me, that doesn't scream "I am a worthy candidate for this position", but I guess this is why we have an application process, right?

Don't mistake my post for pure slander against Moon, he has indeed provided some well constructed, beneficial content toward FAF, such as his "This Week on Slack" post, which he so rightly pointed out in his application. He has also contributed to the workflow of the M&M Discord server, and has often made some good suggestions in the FAF Discord server in terms of improvement.

Unfortunately, I don't think he has done enough in terms of "positive" content to outweigh his negative actions in Discord, and on the forums, the Pornhub account being a prime example, as well as the constant belief that it is okay to publically use the N word in our Discord server. There is also more to the role than the idea of posting FAF related memes. But I'm sure he is aware of that (at least I hope he is).

With the points above, my vote would have to go against Moon. I am in no way suggesting that he should be withdrawn from the vote, but I do hope that people will consider these points before the election.

For now, my vote for other candidate will remain anonymous until an election date has been decided upon. I wish all of you luck, and I hope that you get the result you are expecting. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Don't mistake your post? Sorry but you, the councillor stepping down, came in a freshly created thread and started publically discrediting applicants, I think thoughts like that should be kept to yourself, this bashing doesn't really create a picture of transparency and unbiasedness.

And that's your right to have an opinion, but I think everyone should decide for themselves when the voting time comes. You bringing up his past offenses reminds me of the last PC election with ftx being excluded for his chatban and "attitude". Don't mind that since his election he has done magnitudes more organisational and direct work than previous player councillors. I think moon is reasonable enough to separate his on-the-edge actions from councillor duties. And I'm not sure why the quotation marks around the word "positive" are needed there, me, and I think quite a few others find his slack weekly reports very useful and interesting to read. I don't see anyone else displaying initiative like that towards communication improvement.

I honestly have no idea what was being done apart from posting news on "What's new" and the campaign playthrough youtube series. Putting aside applicants' own initiatives and ideas for now, maybe you can teach me and them what exactly their duties will entail.

I would agree that we didn't get much of an oversight on the job itself.

You bringing up his past offenses reminds me of the last PC election with ftx being excluded for his chatban and "attitude". Don't mind that since his election he has done magnitudes more organisational and direct work than previous player councillors.

Now to be honest I find normal, just like it was the case for FtX, to make sure everyone has in mind the previous offences of an applicant as long as this applicant didn't show a bit of a change since his last sentence : simply because that can show an inability to change or a refusal to consider or question one's own behavior. If someone acts wrongfully, knows it, but refuses to consider any change on the personal level to fit the job, that's probably not someone anyone would want to consider the candidacy of. I remember particularly misplaced words of FtX against Rowey, which made a perfect case for why FtX wasn't fitting for the job at all...
...before he suddenly braked and changed direction. Shouldn't that change have happened, he certainly wouldn't have been given a second chance. So I have good hope the same thing can happen for other applicants.

However JJ's post was quite weird and overall I think I could trust moon (((( to some extent )))) with some responsabilities. I'm not fully aware of the relation he had with JJ during JJ's mandate, but as far as I can remember it was quite stormy.

That being said, even if I could support moon's application, we probably don't want of a promotion councilor who's going to get banned from the forum (aka probably one of the main communication media of FAF) for a bad joke. Being a councilor giving in no mean any form of immunity, I would surely prefer someone who I know will never put themself at risk of creating this kind of trouble.

I don’t quite think you understand the issue that you’re trying to provide a synopsis of nor do I understand the point in bringing in such specific information about the Player Councillor election in a Promo Councillor application thread with 2 applications.

Petricpwnz wrote:Don't mistake your post? I’d like it to be clear that I asked JJ to post his criticism of candidates publicly rather than to keep his thoughts purely to the Council or other selected individuals. It is a public vote and unfortunately or fortunately, that gives everyone a chance to explain their thoughts about the individuals running for the position. JJ has a right to provide his opinion about the candidates same as any other individual on FAF in this thread. That, however, does mean that the value and reach of that opinion can be debated just like any other opinion.

I’m glad JJ is taking an active role in trying to find out who would fufill the requirements of his position the best. If people disagree with his conclusion, well, it’s better to argue during the application process so other viewpoints can be seen rather than having a conclusion forced on FAF further down the line without a solid look at all the information.

Edit: please view the link to my full plan as it outlines things in detail and responds to some questions posed by others
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vm_ ... sp=sharing

I’d like to put my hat in the ring as well.

I have been in FAF for a few years now, although I only really started interacting with the community at large within the last two years. Perhaps you’ve seen some of my old cringey balance posts, noticed me on the various discord servers, or played with me ingame. I also tend to lurk a bit, staying updated on any events, conversations, or drama. I frequently play in every tournament I can, whether it’s FAF, Equilibrium, or even Mapping.

I am actually already part of the promotions team, although I admit that I haven’t put out much so far (I’m currently using my university lab time to produce an overhaul of the basic interface tutorial, with all the new features of FAF). I’ve dabbled a bit in maps, mods, scripting, casting, streaming, and even some ICE-Testing. Though not enough to consider myself an expert in any of these fields, I consider my FAF experience greatly enriched by these activities, and can understand the viewpoints of most, if not all people in FAF. I generally get along well with everyone and can take criticism.

As part of my plan as promotional councillor, I would categorise my target audience for promotion into two categories: The first would be to the people who do not play FAF. Obviously, advertising for people who don’t even know about supreme commander is difficult, and to some degree it is up to them to find their way here. But as a community we should strive to put our best and most recent content forward. This means constantly updating our what's new pages, social media, announcements, and forum posts with news, events, features, and other content that would draw prospective players, such as videos, streams, and art. The second group consists of existing FAF users who play the game, but avoid interacting with the community at large. I know that playing the game is what drew all of us here in the first place, but the truth of the matter is that there’s SO MUCH MORE to FAF. From personal experience and talking to others, I can say that contributing to the community, even if it’s something as simple as talking to others, makes the experience greater for everyone involved. Those are the people who stay with FAF for the long term, who get really good at the game, who lend a hand developing features/content for FAF. To these people I will constantly encourage them to join in. I have several ideas for this, such as mod/map/meme making workshops or cocasts with other content creators.

I would also like to start shining light on some of our more unknown content creators. I often spend time finding small channels like AlyxDelunar and TheSlothGamer, and other casters/streamers (did you know that Yolo has a recent video of a near perfect Setons air BO? Or that Oxide Ion has tutorials on hoverbombing?). I want to bring all the underrated channels and creators to light, both to reward them, and encourage new users to step forward.

As far as management of our social media goes, I would gladly take on the responsibility for managing the Faf Twitter, Facebook, and other outlets if need be. I don’t really have any special plans for this. I would of course make sure it is updated frequently, and have a bit of skill in graphic design.

My ingame name is Evan_ and I am online often in the morning and afternoon (afternoon and evenings for euro timezones). I would be happy to answer any questions, comments, or feedback, both on discord and aeolus.

As a nominee for the Promoters Councillor, I pledge that:
I will dedicate at least 4+ hours a week to my role, including attending conferences
I will advertise all new content that FAF provides using all available social media platforms.
I will fix the !streams command
I understand that if I am unable to perform accordingly, I will be replaced.

But muh pornhub

Pornhub has moved on from what you once knew and is now a hosting site for a large variety of SFW content including videogame gameplay and educational content on everything from biology to technical and practical firearms knowledge, which I view regularly.
Image

I would agree that we didn't get much of an oversight on the job itself.

Like most elections this seems to be open to interpretation which is arguably a good thing.
If you are interested in my interpretation it can be summed up into two areas, internal promotion and external promotion.
While there would be some overlap between the distribution of the two they are still very distinct.

Internal promotion is essentially an expansion on what I already do, which is publicise information that isn't necessarily obscured but not readily accessible to the average FAF user in an attempt to make them more informed. This may include expanding my weekly column to include other areas of FAF, working with the other councilors in general but particular the Player Councilor in dealing with feedback from the community and perhaps interviews with developers in an attempt to explain why certain features take as long they do and to give a general overview of the kind of people that do make up FAF.

External promotion deals with the social media presence of FAF where my goal is to project that FAF is actually a fun place to be and totally isn't half in the grave.
This can be achieved by actually using said social media platforms be it (light-hearted seeing as I have to specify this) memes, promotion of the competitive side of FAF potentially through the advertisement of high-profile tournaments or some of our lovely casters or with stock images I get off google of woman laughing at salads.

I hope that answers your question.
