good old gpgnet

Postby Voodoo » 21 Mar 2018, 11:55

Hey hey,

I just felt a little bit nostalgic and thought hey let's open a thread where we can joke about the good and bad times in gpgnet. I also want to find out how many gpgnet players are still here.

So I remember that the main chat was #Halcyon and it was limited to 100 players. So if more players were online, you ended up in #Freeport sitting there with like 10 - 15 players and no one was talking. That's why you missed the main stuff ^^. Only moderaters and admins were able to join Halcyon at these times. So we had 101 - 110 players in this chat at the end and I loved this feature. Freeport was horrible ^^

And now? We have more than 1000 players in #aeolus. This is indeed great and I'm happy that I found my way to FAF.

So are there other gpgnet players who can tell us how great/horrible the gpgnet time was?

Cool to read the stories. Honestly, I was not around in gpgnet times, I only ever played on FAF. Just wanted to pitch in and express how awesome it is that this amazing game is still alive after all these years thanks to the FAF community :)

I was never one of the good players but i startet with the beta of Supreme Commander in October 2016! :)

Nowadays nobody can imagine what huge improvement ZeP (and his successors!) made to this game:
- starttime of the client: It took about 30-40 seconds to start the old GPG client!
- automatic download of a map from a vault: you had to download mappacks manually to play custom maps
- mod vault and mod download: i had tons of desyncs because everybody had to find and copy the right mod and mod version
manually into the game folder
- and many many more...

Anyhow, this game was so fascinating and without any rival (until today IMHO) that i kept playing until today!

There was a 1vs1, 2vs2 and 3vs3 Ladder in gpgnet with auto-matchmaking but only the 1vs1 Ladder was working without bugs. Costum games were played without any rating system. We used the 1vs1 ladder or player tracker -> /viewtopic.php?f=54&t=3031 to balance our games. There were no information about the player shown in the game lobby at this time.

In GPGnet you had ability to rate and comment replays, that made finding games to cast 20 times easyer, and good replays, especially lower rated, didn't dissapear into nothingness. There also was gobal chart for most commented, best rated, and most downloaded replays, you could surely view top 10 replays in each category and all of them would be amazing (except maybe most downloaded category, since people donwload them to find out why someone esle downloaded them)
all of those replays were amazing. We really need this for FAF ( also being able to view old replays without decync...)

ps. caster could just see recent 10 out of 10 replays, or 8 out of 10... instead of watching them all or waiting for submissions.

I made ZaphodX cast some of the old popular 3599 replays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntBm0R_1Cow here is an example of amazing low rated replay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntBm0R_ ... AFqeoYELck here is a playlist

Player Mielus is still playing FAF... i remember him leaving a comment to every his replay... it was pretty intersting to watch and keep in mind what he thought about game that he played...

But you can't have a normal conversation because the white spacing is way too high so you filled your entire chat screen with like 15 messages
