ITT we argue for a larger pool size

I think the "just try it" phase of the small pool has passed and is now met with large amounts of disgust, it's been clear from the start that a large portion of the vocal community had left ladder over the pool and the people who originally advocated for it have either left or changed their opinion

It's time we change back to a better system.

someone like me who rarely plays ladder would have an easier time getting into a few games on ladder without having to fear to get stomped by people who have played the current pool for quite a few games and already got a better feeling for the map than i do

maybe also include variations of existing maps to get different spawns

edit: a change to the matchmaking process for new users would be nice as well so they don't get matched with 1k+ rated ladder players in their first game - my first ladder game on FAF was vs someone with <500 rating back in the ZeP era and while i didn't know how to play properly i still had a chance and managed to get a win which was a nice feeling despite knowing that i played terrible

Tbh why hasn't there been any real discussion on random spawns or have I missed them. It's something I would very much like.

if i'm not mistaken the spawns are always player one (whoever starts searching) is on slot n1 and player two is on slot n2
so we either have a different code for selecting the spawns (will run into issues as soon as maps with cancer slots come into play) or we create different map versions for ladder where we just change some of the spawn locations for ladder (more manual work but secure in terms of how it will work out)

i honestly never thought about it myself - i just noticed the different spawn in the BHedit tourney in the bh vs petric game

As someone who has yet to experience any different form of map pool, I would like a different one. Preferably a big fat one.
Also assuming I am understanding what petric is saying I think having random but mirrored spawn points would be good, especially for maps like Point of Reach.

if games with more variety in the game flow are wanted, it would be really easy to implement this (one slot is picked at random and the mirror spot is used for the other player, however this works only for maps with odd-vs-even spots).

It could even be applied to adaptive maps where - in addition to the player spawns - some expansions are generated (i.e. the "close-spawn mex" function on randomly selected 1-2 spots) and some of the options are rolled at random too (i.e. the number of water mex, or the amount of mex in the center...). On most adaptive maps the names of the options are standardized so the implementation of this would be rather easy too.

random sounds nice but i actually would go for a predefined settings for these maps, so that the experience can be designed, and not just have a 20% chance to end up on the shitSpot which ruins your fav map

but yeah otherwise its a cool idea. kinda requires a bog pool but hey i always wanted that)

Aside from random spawns u could have 8 different variations of same map. With 4 meshes, with 12, with wrecks in middle, with civs, with walls. It sure would mix it up. We could have a couple of days where entire ladder pool is variations of just one map. Sounds like a new game mode. Could be a type of adaptive map I guess but designed for 1v1 and it's a random variant each time.
