Best/Most fun first map to learn?

Postby AdmiralZeech » 03 Dec 2017, 16:38

Hi, if some beginners wanted to start learning 1v1 matches, what's a good first map to start practicing on? Something that's both enjoyable and educational.

My default since the days of original release was Finn's Revenge, but that's purely because it has every terrain type and looks nicer than desert / mars style maps. I have no idea if it's actually a good competitive map, hahah.

Thanks!

Moonlight is a good place to learn about build orders and map control
Feather: I am usually pretty good in judging people's abilities, intelligence and motives

Evildrew: Just because I didnt choose you for my team last year doesnt give you the right to be all bitchy and negative about my proposal

keep in mind each answer in this thread is really going to be down to personal preference.

I personally loved Loki while I was an utter noob and figuring out ladder with my sparing partners. but be warned it's a foul misstress when you get to more skilled levels of play. other more skilled players will make this go from a map you love to a map you fear.

now I've rationalized the fear and I love it again even though I'm nowhere near confident on this map.

it really depends on your style of play. lately I've been loving Vulcan's reach <3 and there's another one but I forget the name :(

Let me rephrase. When learning the game (but not wanting the complication of different maps all the time), what's the best first map to start with?

any map as long as you don't play it 10000 times in a row (or other maps that play exactly the same)

Phillip, don't let the lad start on voodoo space wars and expect him to "learn the game."

Start on something like theta as suggested by Keyser where as you advance you will see the importance of opening builds leading up and until your ACU departs the base.

The best map to learn how to play on will optimally include: (10km)

A raid-able core base for you and your opponent
A raid-able natural expansion for you and your opponent
Mexes placed at various locations around the map to push out of your base and claim
3 or so lanes (or two and a middle) to move down
Natural reclaim placed around the map
Some high mass value wrecks to fight for
Maybe some areas that encourage drop play like raised plateaus or etc.

:!: Please do learn the basic mechanics instead of working on build orders, you'll learn a few, push through the hopeless players and then'll you'll be stuck at 700 ladder rating with no real understanding of how to play, be ultra difficult to train properly (even for ppl like dog and me), and then your maps will rotate out of the pool or something. Learning the mechanics will get you much further, and you'll happily be able to make your own build orders on the fly while you do so.
