There's plenty about playing multiplayer on it since FAF in LAN is fubar atm. What offline in this context means is without using the FAF client to connect to people but using the direct connect option of the game itself.

If steam works with direct connect(without any steam shenanigans in the backgound) then you'd think the FAF version is just screwed.

Can't confirm though as I haven't tried this recently.

To play multiplayer with remote players without the FAF client you need to set up a virtual LAN.

Apps like 'Hamachi' or 'Tunngle' are commonly used.
I preferred Tunngle when we were using a virtual LAN about 4 years ago when the FAF server was down for a long period.

There is a lobby in these apps where you can chat to organize games ...the downside is no auto updates and no access to the map/mod vault.
We had some issues with de-syncs due to wrong map versions until we Skyped or emailed the latest map to all players.

Last time i used the multiplayer LAN mode from the faf patched game was to test a PR with someone else online so i can confirm that connecting to someone over the internet does work (just need an open port for it).
I'm having a very hard time believing that connecting in a local network doesn't work when connecting online does.
Spoiler: show
yeah you can obviously use hamachi or some other tunneling software but that might be a sub optimal way to do it in terms of latency depending on the number of players and location

I've just tried it and it works fine.

Also there isn't much FAF could break here, it would be the multiplayer lobby (which people would notice) but not any connection code as that's in the engine.

Playing FAF LAN works fine with the offline exe, just make sure both computers are updated to latest faf and have same maps/mods etc. I LAN FAF every 6-12 months and never had an issue. Trying to play online from the same house can be a bit of a problem though. That generally takes some trouble shooting as the ports like to break the game.

that's what LAN IS. "Local Area Network" E.G. routing back up to the same and single router and not beyond.

and YES it's really fucking hard to get working.
