I was sandbox testing some stuff yesterday and happened to notice that SACU's were actually really cheap at only 2.1k-1.95k mass. I realised I was so used to building the ras, combat, and other presets that I never actually bothered with default support commanders. And from what I've seen, most people go for the presets if they go for SACUs at all.

Is there ever a point in picking the general purpose unit instead of the more expensive upgraded ones?

Default followed by manual upgrades takes longer and (might) be more expensive than just using presets.

I only use the default when playing seraphim to get the teleporter, shield and fabricator. I haven't thought of other use cases to be honest.

The preset SACUs are named after the preset so if you make a sera tml preset ACU your opponent will know what kind of upgrade it has already.
So making default SACUs can be used to make it slightly harder to determine what kind of SACU it is.

Definitely more expensive. What I'm wondering is whether building un-upgraded commanders and keeping them that way is viable at all.

And yeah, keeping them unnamed is useful, I remember Heaven made a video on it.
