Ryzen 5 for FAF

Postby gumpy » 05 May 2017, 03:46

Hey Guys

building a new PC and for most of what i need to do the ryzen 5 is perfect but i'm worried that it will generate a poor cpu score for me in FAF and i'll end up getting kicked.

Anyone had any experience with the ryzen cpus in faf and if so what cpu scores are you getting?

thanks in advance

Ryzen is posting single thread scores within 4-7% of Intel's current gen depending on who you ask. You will still be as fast as anyone with a 3-4k series Intel chip, especially if you plan on overclocking. I don't personally own one of them, but just looking at synthetic benchmarks (which by and large are pretty true to IRL performance in supcom, since it is 100% CPU bound no matter how bad your GPU is) I am 95% sure you could grab one of the ryzen 5s and be gauranteed to not be the slowest person in the lobby.

It's probably going to be a great CPU for FAF, but why get a Ryzen 5 when it's still falling short of intel?

They're cheap as, err, chips. If I were looking for an upgrade I'd have been sorely tempted. No doubt it will play FAF just fine. I say go for it. AMD could use the support.

Yeah to get a 4 core 8 thread chip for cheaper than an i5 is fanastic for everything else I do.

Ryzen's singe threaded performance isn't the best, probably still faster then 80% of the FAF community depending on how well it clocks. Be sure to get the latest windows updates, afaik some changes in thread management helped Ryzen's performance. Like with Intel's first Hyperthreading models, disabling HT will improve singlecore performance.

I'm also still not convinced cache doesn't make a difference in actual FAF sim speeds. Ryzen 5 has surprisingly much cache for it's price.

Also don't bother going for 4c/8t ryzen part. Go straight for the 6c/12t as difference in price is negligible but future prospect are way bigger. When it comes to the FAF performance you should expect at least score of around 200 in game benchmark as my i5 2300 at 3.03 ghz is scoring 248 points :D And ryzen is faster than this by large margin and have higher clock's. So all in all you shouldn't worry about the sim speed as Im more than sure that it will be other ppl than you slowing down the game.

my current i5 3570 gets me 190 so if it was worse on a ryzen 5 i'd shoot myself.

That's why I used the "at least" in the sentence. Also it depends if you have K version and I yes then on which clock did your silicone end? As high clocked i5 will still have better IPC than ryzen counterpart in games. But if you need your CPU to do little bit more than gaming then Ryzen is the choice to go with as not only will it offer nice perf in games but also will wreck intel in semi-pro when it comes to price/perf.

Tbh, I don't think that upgrade would be worth the money.
