Concerning poor ettiquette, old farts and being a curmudgeon

Postby RocketRooster » 30 Apr 2017, 21:20

I had a number of games today where my opponents didn't bother to return the glhf and whatnot. This I can deal with. What annoys the crap out of me is ragequiting the game when you're on the ropes without so much as a gg or wp or efffyou or anything.

I'm not sure why it bothers me, but I /am/ old and old-fashioned and always try to display impeccable manners and sportsmanship (as far as I'm able).

The win or the loss isn't important to me, what's important to me is having fun and maybe a bit of a laff with my opponent. There are some great people to play against (partymarty81 gets an honourable mention here - but that said he is also getting on in life  )

I suppose I can't dictate or project what aspect anybody gets their enjoyment from. Some people hate losing and must win at all costs for them to have any enjoyment. It's sad, but that's life.

Be that as it may, I don't see why I should tolerate bad manners, especially since I do have a reasonable expectation that my opponent will handle him- or herself with class and respect for me as I do for them.

So I propose a bit of blueprint mindfuckery to hit them where it hurts: DOUBLE ladder points loss if you disconnect from the game.

Yes, sometimes a disconnect can't be helped due to technical reasons but it is fairly rare and in my opinion the benefit will outweigh the cost.

I might be tilting at windmills here but that ain't gonna stop me from saying my piece and along with that give a big fat gentlemanly middle finger to all those wankers who had a shitty upbringing.

So there.

So you double the point loss because a player doesn't feel like wasting your nor his time when a game is lost? You also feel like increasing the point loss because of disconnects is not a big deal?

Decreasing the ladder playerbase from 5 players to 2 isn't a good idea tbh.

You should lose upwards of 40 points per game if you don't sit around for 2 minutes waiting for your acu to crater into the terrain

That's one way to kill ladder (if you don't think it's already dead that is)

Not talking to your opponent should not be seen as bad sportsmanship, you're one of 50 faceless names on the internet, not the bloke from down the road

Rocket, the reason some people do not return gl or hf is 1) they don't know what it is OR 2) they are busy giving out commands/assessing the map instead of wasting their time chatting.

You must be joking. Claiming that a person ragequits the game because they think they're doing me the favour of a few seconds is sophistry of the highest order. It is an alt-f4 tantrum and it's juvenile.

Your behaviour in all arenas in life informs your character for good or ill. It is therefore more the pity when someone does not have the backbone or common decency to hit enter, hit the g key twice, then hit enter again.

Yes, I can completely see how that would waste my time, amidst a pastime of wasting time for minutes on end. It would completely ruin the experience to be congratulated for a game well played. Can't have that, nossir.

Perhaps my real issue here is that I forget that some people lose sight of the fact that there is a human being on the other side of the computer screen. It is likely due to the fact that they ought to get out more, or simply need a bit more stewing and maturing in the crucible of life.

Yes, and that's why I don't have a problem with the greetings. I have forgotten once or twice myself. When the game is up though there is no excuse.

And that is the crux of the matter, isn't it? It's whether you have the empathy to realise that you're not playing against an AI and are able to broaden your perspective enough to realise that your inability to see the other person's face does not mean they don't have one.

One's character isn't decided by how you behave when you have onlookers, but when no one is looking.

There, you have received your old fart's preaching session for the day. Go forth and multiply.
