FAF players' geolocation map

Howdy fellers,

Do we have a map somewhere showing a dot for the geographic location of each player? It would be interesting to see where peeps are at and the distribution of awesome.

I believe Google maps has a free API for precisely this sort of thing, so if we don't have one, I will make one if there is sufficient interest.

Hi Ryan,

this is a good idea but somehow some of the people are already showing the wrong flag in the FAF client (e.g. BRNK had a canadian flag while residing in florida), so i don't think this map would be very helpful.

Why not ask the players? Have a little pop up show when you start the client that asks. Like how Steam does little pop up surveys every now and then

Yes. The idea is to make it a fluffy sticky on the forum, people can opt in as they see fit. So it doesn't have to rely on buggy IP posititioning.

Of course, some peeps will place themselves in antarctica but what can you do?

Determining the location via IP-Adress work for the most part and asking people wouldn't.

Do you know how accurate the stored data is? By that I mean, it doesn't help if the info is simply "Russia" when the person could be sitting in St. Petersburg or the Kamchatka Penisula.

This is exactly the thing I intended... although it doesn't seem like there was a lot of participation. I mean, where are the Kamchatka players???
