One-Account-Per-Computer rule a poor choice IMO

Postby ParadoxFox » 31 Dec 2016, 07:59

So I wanted to introduce some of my friends to FAF. I have a few PCs with FAF installed, so I had them each make an account. But once we tried to log them in, we got the message, "Your computer is already associated with another FAF account." Cool.
I can't link Steam accounts because my friends don't all have steam accounts with FA on them. Why is this a requirement? I own at least one copy of the game outside of Steam; I guess those are useless. And it's not like this rule stops smurfing. Not only have I run into many self-admitted smurfs, but I've run into two players in the last few months who were using two accounts at once to give themselves double resources.
So thanks for nothing, FAF. That's three potential new players you've lost.
And, TBH, if I can't easily play with my friends, you'll probably lose me as a player, too.

It doesnt stop smurfing completely but it reduces it a lot.

Creating steam accounts for your friends should not be hard and if you have more copies of FA, you can just enter the cd keys into steam and it should give you gold edition of supcom.

There is currently a steam sale so you could gift your friends a copy of SC:FA for just € 2.49 each or your regional equivalent.
If you want to play the FAF patched version at your place with your pcs with your friends you could also ask Sheppy aka ColonelSheppard for his modified version that he uses for lan parties. I'm sure he'd share it with you.

The disadvantages of uid far outweigh the advantages, like I said about a million times...

It's unfortunate you have to suffer for this :(

They are banned, at least the people using multiple accounts in the same game.
If anyone is not banned, and still breaking the rules please mention it?
People don't report things enough here, but even if they did it wouldn't be possible to remove this as an issue - FAF, and by extension FAF accounts are free. It's all too easy to make a new one. This is why the UID is required.

On the subject of non-steam editions of the game, if you use the CD key of any supcom copy it'll give you one gold edition of supcom and fa on steam, and the cd key of any FA key will do likewise, so you can get two for every non-steam copy you have, as long as the CD keys were unused.

If you own several non-Steam FA copies you can use them, all FA keys work on Steam. If you have the SupCom + FA package you can use it two times, each key will give you both SupCom + FA on Steam.

I do not like gain software like Origin, Steam, Ubi MS. I do not want, understand I am REFUSING, to change my PC into a Game console. If you want to sell Game console product, do it. But respect the PC game way of life. You certainly know that the Console market is falling down and you want to do the same in the PC market. You will get the same result: total market loss!
This specially true in this topics when FAF is restricting functionalities in the name of fake security. Like all stupid security policies on the "cloud" we can now see, it do not protect us, it's boring us and it's missing the target. As I am an old PC user, I have seen so many organizations just failing because of fake security policies. I took the time to wrote this because I have enjoyed Forged alliance since "Total Annihilation". Please, as significant example, understand Microsoft took all market shares by providing the most "unsecured license system" : DOS 3.20 They lost all the market with the most secure license system : Vista.

Hello ParadoxFox,

if i understand you right, you are trying to make a local multiplayer game ?

If so, then why not start the game manually and create a LAN multiplayer ?

Update the game on every PC. If you can't use the FAFLobby, update only 1 PC.
Then copy from this PC the folder "C:\ProgramData\FAForever\*.*" to all other PC's.

Now you can manually start the game from "C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin\ForgedAlliance.exe".

Create/join a Multiplayer game from the ingame menu.

Does this solve your problem ?

[edit] well, necro post :)

nobody is forcing anyone to use steam
if you have your regular retail copy of the game you can play on FAF just fine

No, they do not work all.
Stop spreading urban legends. I have 2 german retail copies including Supcom and FA and I can't activate any of the 4 keys on Steam.
