Torpedo bombers fire directly

Postby StylisticSagi » 25 Dec 2016, 14:30

Did something changed to them?
I noticed that they now fire their torpedos directly at the enemy and not first in the water?
This causes that torpedo defences no longer can counter them.

Yes this was changed several patches ago to improve effectiveness of torpedo bombers. Cybran and UEF ones were always like this, but Aeon and Seraphim were not. Seraphim one was the only one that was actually affectted by torp defense, and with Aeon one they both had problems hitting targets in shallow water.

Hmm i made a mod (wich now looks really weird). To increase the effectivness on a diffrent way.
I changed the headingarcrange to 360 making it so that torpedo bombers shot their torpedo's from any angle.
The moment they hit the water then they turned into torpedo's and attack like a normal torpedo.
This increased their effectivness enourmusly.
Now with this patch it looks silly because it has more homing missiles directly to a target and it is very hard to comprehend that it should not being able to target hovered units or land units all together.
Perhaps this could be an idea for another patch?
And if not how can i myself change it this way? I can't exactly find wich can make the bomb fall straight down and not aiming for the target.

the issue is that since cyb/uef torpedo bomber projectiles are bugged. they dont have a collision box set up, but do have the torpedo category, so torpedo defenses should not ignore them but they do. so in effect they function like depth charges
the aeon torpedo bomber actually has depth charges
the seraphim one had actual torpedoes which were changed to depth charges because it wasnt fair for it to be the only one.

and the aeon/sera ones got fixed because they were annoying when their torpedoes hit the sea bed instead of their target.

so in the name of convenience and consistency, thats how it is. i dont think your method is better tbh, since it doesnt solve these underlying issues, so i doubt this will be removed in some later patch.

if you want to remove it for yourself, simply go through the github code and apply the reverse changes, or look at the scripts from the vanilla version of the game and copy those.

Aeon long range capability was really useful on some more open water maps though as they would be able to fire their torpedoes before cruisers were able to shoot them down. This allowed five skimmers to reliably kill a cruiser while you needed six cormorants to achieve the same due to their bomber nature.

It's a shame this had to go due to other issues. It was a nice(and easily visible) way to have faction diversity.

Perhaps we should see about adding a toggle.

If only the pilots were told that torpedoes don't work if you drop them on land in their basic training we wouldn't even have to toggle, they would do it themselves.

Then all you as the player would need to do to enable to long-range torpedoes, would be to micro them in from a vector where they had enough open water to utilise this.

One can dream, right? :D

If we follow the story line the only pilot is in the commander and sub commanders, all the rest are drones...
But i will look to change this because having a so called torpedo bomber that actually fires homing missiles and can somehow only target naval units is a bit to weird and a no go for me haha :D. But i was tweaking them anyway because torpedo bombers are (besides submarines) not strong enough vs naval compared to other bombers. So there would apart from submarines. They should be a key unit in all naval maps and now they are not.
