Can we remastered FA?

Postby newone » 13 Sep 2016, 04:55

When the homeworld was remastered, I really hope to see the same thing happened on FA. One year has passed, nothing has happened.
Last night, a man who loves FA very much, he quit the game for one reason that he wants to make a remaster of FA, I really agree with him. if he made it, I would like a buy one copy of it.
Just one person to do this things, maybe it last for 5 or 10 more years, then I would be very old, and I can't play FA anymore.
So, Is there anyone who can make a remaster of FA, I would buy it as I bought FA before.

do we have the source code? no.

well ok that answers that.

we can do nothing but small mods and balance tweaks without it. first thing we could accomplish if we had the source code (and that's admitting someone among the current coders is that good (or that we'd have someone that good then)) is multi-threading and multi-coring FA. that's just an example and I'll let you imagine how good that would be.

But dreams are futile and serve no purpose unless they fuel actual action. So let's stop that right there unless you're willing to take cash out of your pocket to make it happen.

What I propose (and am willing to personally host) is Kickstarting the purchase of the FA source code and the payment for at least three to six months of a high tier dev to implement multithread multi core maybe even update the engine in other respects a little bit.

how does that sound?

anything other is just wishfull thinking.

Unfortunately we cant touch the engine of FA, we have have neither the sourcecode or even some kind of allowance to decompile and modify that ( not that it would be feasible ).
So while better performance engine-wise ( less lag, better pathfinding) is not going to happen, there are some areas that are modifyable:
  • The lua code of the game, we can do basicaly anything with it as long we stay within a certain framework defined by the engine. There is alot possible with this, think for example of all the sim and ui mods or how different the lobby ( when hosting) looks.
  • We can use reshade to sqeeze the last bit out from the graphics viewtopic.php?f=41&t=9969#p107978 . I have never tried it myself, but i'm curious how for example how rk's explosions would look ingame with some postprocessing applied to it.
  • We could also use different higher quality models for units, just like some sim mods use their custom models. But this would be a lot a work, so i'm not sure this will happen. Maybe if it is done one unit at a time.

If nothing else, I would be happy to get multi-threading/multi-core capability. My CPU isn't hella fast but it has eight freaking cores.

Why not just rebuild the game from scratch in a new, licensed engine?

We know exactly how we want the game to look, feel, and function. So, all the UI, texture, and models will already be created. We would only have to port them to the new engine.

Even if. Who would do that ? There's no one already to fix lobby bugs. Re-doing the game from scratch ? :p
Maybe try to convince the Spring team :p
