4G internet??

Postby UtterlyBrainDead » 27 Jul 2016, 18:23

I'm looking for people using 4G mobile internet packages to play online games like FAF.

Please can I ask what your experiences are like? Do you have low pings or do you lag? Whats your reliability of decent speeds like? If in the UK who are you using for your service?

Thanks

It would depend on a lot of things. How strong is your signal? How close are you to a tower? of what quality is the wifi antennae on your hotspot? does it have ethernet?

I used a t-mobile hotspot for a while about 3 years ago right when they were rolling out 4g coverage, and in my experience if you are practically standing under the cell tower you can play an "acceptable" game in the FPS of your choice, and supcom worked pretty well. It dropped occasionally, maybe 5-6 seconds in 10-15 minute spacing, but for the most part did fine. Supcom does pretty well with high latency connections since it has an internal cycle that accounts for 500 ping.

If I were you, I would go to whatever provider has the best coverage and ask them if they have a test drive program. A lot of them will give you a last generation Iphone or something to test coverage with (I know for a fact tmobile does, verizon "might"). Just make sure that the hotspot is functional on it and take it to your house and try it. If it works, great, and if it doesn't, you just saved your money on buying one.

As far as speeds go, it beat anything available on a land line. Something like 28 down and 16 up in my area. The ping is the problem.

i'm currently using 4g to play supcom and it works 99% of the time
Keep in mind that a 4g will have higher ping than your regular broadband so if you want to play games that require a stable low ping a mobile con will kinda suck.

Ok thanks both

I have a 4G mobile phone, can I somehow figure out the latency using that?

just google some sort of speed test or latency test and run it.
if you use your phone for gaming i recommend checking how much data you can download since you might have to pay up if you exceed your limit (which might get incredibly expensive depending on your country/contract)

I've played few games on 4g, depending on my location I got 15/10 up to 100/30mb/s. It was fine only problem is you always have closed ports so if faf proxy dies which happens more than often so does the game.
You can test your speed/ping with a phone but remember those results may not translate into what you'll get on your pc as some phone manufacturers put excellent 4g modules on their phones and you might buy crappy modem later and be disappointed.. or the other way around. My Nexus 6p gets around 50/25mb/s where I am currently, and huawei 3372 modem hooked into my laptop sitting next to the phone barely reaches 15/5... Both use the same network obviously.

This isn't worth doing in Australia. You can't forward UDP packet data over cellular systems. Not formally, anyway.

Otherwise, so long as you're with a major carrier (Telstra/Optus) your pings will be good, globally. They'll just be bad to every other Aussie you might be connecting to on FAF.

That's not right. 4G/LTE carries UDP traffic just as well as it carries TCP traffic.

The problem is that most (if not all) carriers put you behind a carrier-grade NAT, which restricts your ability to do p2p connectivity using UDP.

Yep, that's what you'd expect. You're in Australia, right?

Here, you can configure port forwarding of UDP packet data on 6112 on all your cellular devices (or use apps if tethering from android) to your heart's content, and you won't get a byte passing through. That's all I'm saying - it doesn't work in Australia. Doesn't really matter how it doesn't work, but yes it's nice to know :)
