stop ui lag: frame rate

Postby SeraphimLeftNut » 06 Feb 2016, 00:13

Those of us who have ever asked for help with lag on any forum anywhere are immediately told to turn off vsync, so its probably safe to turn it off.

Once you turn it off the frame rate limit for FA increases from 60 (or whatever your refresh rate is) to 100 Hz. This 100 Hz is determined by the value of sc_Frametimeclamp (default 10 ms) and can be changed to anything with large effects on fps.

The increase in frame rate puts extra strain on the cpu, specifically the ren thread. I have found that keeping a consistent 100 fps is not possible with lots of units and lots of camera movement and other issues that affect the ren thread.

Some of the choices you have are: turn vsync back on, increase sc_Frametimeclamp to something like 15 ms, set a frame rate limit in your gpu software, set the number of prerendered frames to 1 (default is let software determine this).

As of today I am leaning toward a frame rate limited in the gpu software for best results.

Please share your opinion on this.
