Almost exactly what I said to blodir in pm last night
+1

Koppa: play syrtis then play vya. They're very different, and the mass levels are insanely different. Also syrtis requires lot more t1 rather than just instant turtle tech

Yeah I agree, FAF balance sucks, but that doesn't change the fact there's still infinite times more decisionmaking on 10x10 map than 5x5

I don't think I should need to explain this?

viable strategy on 10x10 : (depending of the map ofc)
spam T1 and push with com till the end.
rush T2 land
T2 land spam + gun com push
T3 land rush.
T2 air to harass opponent.
drop at T1 and T2 stage.
ras rush and strat spam.
Com drop.
(not talking about the snipe, and less conventional strategy)

viable strategy for 5x5 map :
spam T1 and push
rush T2
gun com
T2 com and tower creep
T1 air and T2 air strategy

obv there is diversity of strategy for 5x5 and 20x20 (no/less T1/T2 push, with com upgraded or not)

You can give as many reasons as you want for not playing 5x5 maps. But in the end every single one of them will be biased because you don't like playing 5x5 maps for whatever reason.

I'm absolutely sick of people picking maps or whatever for ladder based on their opinion of the map or the way the game is meant to be played.

Just because you don't like them or they don't have much decision making or whatever reason you want to give, you should still play them because they are part of the game. I like 5x5 maps, there are quite a few lower level people that also like 5x5 maps.

Therefore they should be included. Regardless of whatever you think. Sure, not in large quantities. But an increase in 1 doesn't matter. It might even reduce the number of 10x10 maps that there are (because there are so many of them, they get boring after a while).

There are many maps that are good 1v1 maps and they never get picked for ladder, even whilst everyone complains about maps being overplayed. Maybe you guys should start looking.

Not sure if you are answering to me.
I never said that i don t want to play 5x5 maps even if i don t really enjoy them as much as other map.
I was stating some fact about the diversity of gameplay depending of the size of the map.

+ i don t really understand your answer, if people don t like 5x5 they have the right to say it. "Being sick" of them is quite a stupid attitude.

I think the #1 priority in the map pool is to have maps that as few people as possible will hate. For example having Pyramid in the pool very likely makes some people quit playing ladder, but I doubt anyone starts playing ladder just because of Pyramid.

The #2 priority is to represent all styles of play both within the mapchoices and within the map pool overall. For example on Fields of Isis even an aggressive player is forced to turtle - whereas Syrtis is an eco focused map that still has plenty of opportunities for an aggressive players to over-run their opponent early on.

Here's the map pool I designed in collaboration with a lot of people on [e] TS last sunday:

5x5
  • Theta Passage
  • Crimson Feud
  • Theta 5

10x10
  • Desert Planet II
  • Twin Rivers
  • Loki
  • Syrtis Major
  • Eye of the Storm
  • Forbidden Pass
  • White Fire v2
  • Vulcan’s Reach
  • Open Palms
  • Craftious Maximus

20x20
  • Roanoke Abyss
  • Point of Reach

Where are the statistics and poll threads showing that we like or dislike maps?

Kalvirox nailed it that the opinion of people are kind of frustrating in that there will always be some maps liked or not. I hate Vya-3, Crimson, and Pizza, for instance, but I've made it a mission to get better at it...

Could we make the map pool not so.... tiny? I personally am sick of people getting scared of large map pools in fear that they won't have super-efficient meta starts. This community has bread a legion of players that think if you don't have some hyper-fine-tuned meta that you are a worthless player and should dodge a map with the lack of knowledge.

Well the consensus is that we need a "opt-in" system, you'll have to wait for quite some time for that to happen. For now we just need a new map pool until that system can be changed
