My FaF unit modeling start: Mantis Tank

Postby Morax » 23 Oct 2015, 22:22

With 3-D printers becoming more and more economical I've been starting some projects to make some cool prints, including a 3-D FaF unit database.

My native modeling talent comes with SolidWorks and on version 2016 the surfacing is getting really nifty...

I'm working based off of this image:

After about thirty minutes I got the first portion of the leg fairly well done. Stay tuned for the full thing in the next few weeks : )

That's sweet that your doing that. You probably already know but just in case - you can pull in the actual models & textures from the game files

Into SolidWorks? I'll have to look up the extraction process later and use it as a base for the rest as time marches on.

For this one I want to do it from scratch as I'll be "spiffying up the detail" a bit and making it look cooler in some aspects.

My hopes is that we as a community can build a new game from the ground up and since I don't know how to code perhaps I could do some modeling for units and give art direction.

The import I meant was for blender / 3dsmax - but I assumed there would be some converter for SolidWorks.

New game sounds nice but I can't see it happening. Look at Nomads :) and thats with the hard bit (game engine) already done.

Would be very cool with some remodelling of our current units, with the evolution in GPUs since the release we should be able to increase polygon counts a bit.

I guess it would especially be worthwhile with the ACUs, experimentals and other big units - ones that are often in a players view.

This reminds me that I need to get back to animating. My enthusiasm has faded somewhat though. Though if we build an FA HD remake or even a SupCom 3, I could probably commit more heavily to animating for it.

Well once again we just use strat view anyway so even though updated animations would be terrific ... its hard to justify the time

Well not all of us use strat view all the time... if someone is ready to invest the time why discourage him ? RKS explosions was a nice mod and it translated into some graphics evolution in the core FAF game. A graphics and models overhaul would be really nice, SCFA is a pretty game for its age and is worthy of some evolution in the beauty department if it wants to keep all its appeal to players, old and new.
