Just looking at the homepage (and equivalent part of the lobby) makes me cringe. It looks so outdated, it must have scared away a huge number of potential new players. Just image that you never played FA before and then opening faforever.com. It's not a good advertisement for the game, the awesome platform FAF actually is, and the community.

I say this will all respect to the (former) coders and designers, without them we wouldn't even have FA today. And I also understand that "cleaning up" the server code is the primary goal right now (taking into consideration that visionik is running FAF on $700,- worth of server hardware a month). All I'm saying is that you should not underestimate the impact of aesthetics. If you don't look like a modern, professional platform, you will not attract new players and all the technical optimizations in the world are going to be pointless.

Some ideas since it's the good timing for that :
-see the number of games played in the stats on the lobby when you do "view player statistics in the chat"
-see deviation maybe?

A solution when you wait in a game for people, like the chat in game is also on the lobby, annoying to alt tab. And even better if we have a message when the game is full.

But maybe you only want to do the design, and not adding other features. Whatever, I've tried at least.

  • static page is planned
  • static, e.g. played maps count are extra not there
  • deviation from your rating? you have the game quality and I did not want to mark games because of rating

And what about just facilitate the creation of game title ?
Two optional fields which will add a suffix to the title with the "recommended ranked range" by the game creator.
(No obligation of following it like today)
It could just standardize the game titles and add the possibility to sort them by recommended rank.

Exactly was I said!
Only a visual seperated area for ranking, no restriction.

Nearly ALL games have a ranking range in the title ...
"all welcome"
"1.1k+"
"<1000"

That is very annoying...
From Usability view you have two information in the title: "the ranking range" and a "title"
It is hard to filter and sort the games ...

The rating range is only a visual gimmick.
If we have a optional ranking (you can disable the rating range) maybe the focus go more
on to the title, mods, map, balance and not on the rating in the title ...
And people don't add rating ranges in the title ...

But yes, the "Seton Council" must decide.

This has been discussed many times, and even coded if I remember correctly, but dismissed because a lot people has a very good argument : it will make joining games very hard if it's a hard restriction.

The way I choose (but abandoned) is to make matchmaker for team game (code still there) + the possibility to choose a specific map for it, and make custom entirely rating free.

Remember the rating system for custom was implemented at the start of FAF with a custom team matchmaker in mind, and rating were displayed to the user to do it manually until it was made. It was never my attention to make a way to restrict games to a range of people or create endless discussions for balancing teams.

While seeing my nickname, the hoster accept me because in not play ranked.
