A 2k setons player will have a different set of skills and criteria compared to say, a 2k non-setons player.

People tend to stay within their own playing circles within the community, and tend to be known to each other within them.

For instance, everyone has a particular affection for a certain Robo in team games.

Pros:
- personal satisfaction for being able to punish stupid teammembers
- Good work maybe appreciated / bad work is also rewarded

Cons:
- maybe hard for teams who lost and make each other responsible
- i may always rate my firens/buddies with +10
- personally i dont get all the thing i am doing/should do in a game - so i hardly get, what the other do. Maybe i just dont see the "good" actions and rate him bad
- noob-bashing :(

Secondly, there has been a great amount of squabbling over the rating system, and none of it is fruitful. The reality is, EVERY rating system is partially flawed and can be exploited to some degree whether large or small. The rating system that we have in place is one of the most solid that you can have, and is handled brilliantly compared to other games. I think we should leave well enough alone.

Strongly agree with this. I have seen some players with poor ratings that play great and some players with higher ratings that play badly. It happens. It's pretty hard to free ride off of other players to get your rating to go up... because the points gained or lost are based on the match up. Unless I'm missing something? I'd say that the main reason why it happens is that there are a lot of different skills in sup com, and people have different strengths etc. If you put someone in a position they're better at they play better than their rating etc.

Anyways, gold stars would be susceptible to the same problem. It could also turn rating into a popularity contest. It also would enable bad players to assess other players... people often blame the wrong person for a loss. People in general will probably do a really bad job of rating others... much better to let the results determine the rating.

Like Brnk said, the rating system is really, really good. In my experience, a really small amount of games is swung based on someone being way worse/way better than his rating. As long as you intelligently balance positions before the game, the games are often really close.

I'm guessing that the phenomenon you're noticing is more the result of people having good/bad games. I'm ~1350, but some games I crush a ~1700, and some games I just blow it for my team. Part of that is being good/bad at different maps, and another part is people having a particularly good game. Sup com is often swung by really small decisions and slim margins. If you're tired and forget to turn on infinite build on a factory, it can be the different between a stomp and being stomped. It's the nature of the game. No rating system will avoid that.

I have been thinking of ways to allow players to assess the skill levels of others which doesn't require much programming or vast amounts of data to be stored by the FAF servers.

Currently I feel score doesn't work because too many people free ride off better players to get their rank. I have played against 1500-2000s who play like they are 800 and vice versa.

So how about every player can be rated with a gold star system? Other people on FAF could giving them gold stars (out of 10 perhaps) and the average could be displayed in game lobbys or by right clicking on them in chat and selecting view player statistics.

Then, as an example, people hosting could say only people with 1000+ and 5 stars or 1500+ and 8 stars etc. It would also help correct bad attitudes in game because abusive players will end up with a low star average when people get their revenge by awarding them just 1 gold star.
