But even with AZ UI, you still can't chain upgrade, because you need to deselect-select the building to get the next upgrade. This is fixable too with an UI mod though, but AZ doesn't. AZ mostly changes the hotkeys from working when you release the key to working when you press the key, but there is still UI lag.

I don't think the short burts of lag when quickly trying to select the ED2,3,4 and 5 upgrades after another have anything to do with the performance of your PC.
I'm using an i7-3770K, GTX 680 + SSD and I get them as well.

upgrade ed1 straight to ed5 is gameplay change (ed1->ed5)

but auto upgrade with 1 click from ed1 to ed1-5(ed1->ed2->ed3->ed4->ed5) is ok and is moddable as i said, you have to find someone to make it as a mod

I think you missed the point. This isn't a gameplay change, the cybran are still going to have to upgrade their shields 4 times doing one upgrade at a time. This is a ui change to automatically continue to upgrade the shields.
