Are the variations in the mockup I posted so similar that bad color reproduction is a real issue? I sort of doubt it, but I could be wrong...

But more importantly, the original suggestion was to make everybody on a team the exact same color, so it would still be better than that for most people. And of course the suggestion was that it be an optional lobby setting.

Well, yes. On my IPS screens where I viewed your pic earlier this week (when I made the post), all the colors were easily distinguishable. However, on this 14" 1440x900 TN screen on a 2007' Thinkpad T61.. the 2nd and 3rd red look very, very familiar. You really have to put them right next to each other w/o anything in between to see they are different. But 14" 1440x900 screens are known to suck really hard at IQ...

You need to do fancy engine patching to change this.

If it were a lobby option like speed2 is suggesting, I think a simple workaround might actually be even better... Instead of making everyone on a team the exact same color, make everybody minor variations of a common, team color. As an example:

Seems like it would be easier to do, colors can be similar enough to makes teams obvious, but still slightly different to avoid confusion.

I like the idea that the all units on the enemy team appear the same colour to you, obscuring the identity of the person controlling the unit. (Though you would continue to be able to see the different colours of your own team)

This is so true! Or I lost because I got double teamed...

My favorite is when everyone thinks they were double teamed the whole game because the whole other team played as a team.

So e.g. team one can only select some variations of red, team two can only select some variations of blue, and so on...

The thing is, it wasn't bad at all. Would it be possible to make it as an regular option so the result is that you'll see the whole enemy team in same color, but your allies have different colors, since you want to recognize them.

Why this might be a good idea?
I belive it could improve team play, because right now in team games, player looks at units attacking him and says to team mate: "those are units from your opponent raiding me you moron". The way this option would work would would prevent this and you would play against enemy team, not just specific players. I think this could improve teamplay. More cooperation, less blaiming team mates. How do I know this? Ive tested it bit during that period we could all choose the same color. That way we were focred to recognize own units from teammate's. And saw the whole enemy team in one color. So we were playing against whole team, not just specific players AKA 4x 1v1...

What do you guys think?

Hi,
Actually, there is a way to do that in game without messing with the colors. There is a toggle to switch between "normal" colors and team colors (team blue, ennemy red, something like that). Located near the intelligence and economy info buttons.
Isn't that sufficient ?

Messing more with colour presentation purely client side is definitely a good idea and a few people have tried.

Problem is currently the only way to manage them is by setting them simulation side: everyone needs to see either team colours or the same colour for every player (Depending on their local setting)
