As far as getting people to buy in, it may be better to do 1st and 2nd prizes, 3rd if enough interest. "All or nothing" is a significant barrier to entry if you know you're not likely to come in first, but if 2nd takes 3 entry fees and 3rd breaks even...

EDIT: skill brackets may not work well because it needs a lot more people playing, but prize multipliers based on each competitor's odds might be interesting? (For example, if a 2100 rating player takes first with a 1700 in second, maybe the pot is split more like 50/50, with the other way around being 75/25.)

Prepayment to a TD to enter the tourney? And by that...accepting to get maps they dislike.

Ok so it seems there is atleast some appetite from players for cash tournaments, so here is an idea: why not put your own cash up?

A tournament can be held weekly/bi-weekly/monthly or something and there is an entry fee of say $10-15 with the winner taking all. Now to stop the same people from winning all the time the winner of a tourament wouldn't be allowed to enter the next 1-2 tournaments. Maps can be selected from a map pool with a random number generator used to select the exact maps (no cancer ofc).

The only problems that I can see with this method is: would everyone be as good as their word with forefeiting their cash and probably some arguements over the map pool (that is assuming people are willing to put their own cash up ofc).

It would be nice if there would be some automation in stuff like this. Would also be the only way to make this an actual regular tournament, seeing as all of the regular stuff that are run by people have pauses in regularity.

What I would think is really nice is this (people who played Guild Wars may recognize this):

Monthly tournament:
- 2 rounds (swiss, then best N players go knockout)
- Maybe money prizes, but in-game prizes would be nice as well (accessories for ACUs for example aside from the usual avatars in chat lobby)
- First has permanent prize, first N after that have cool accessory for coming month, first N after that have a less cool accessory for coming month

Daily or weekly tournaments:
- Qualify for monthly tournament

This could all be automated (lots of work, so may be utopia, I would be interested in helping develop a backend for this).

So I probably hijacked your thread here, sorry for that. Above is mainly just a brainfart which I think would be awesome. If you don't think it would be awesome (or is not what you have in mind at all) you can just ignore it :D
