just start to love losing!
and if you want to have a fun game, write me or add me as a friend when you want to play an easy, slow paced game!

also, i can gie you one advice: use GAZ_UI. its awesome! with F1 you have very good shortcuts (i.e. get the closes engi), and also you can drag and change your build queue.
dont forget that you can even make many
build orders for your fabrics!

I discovered the problem with the missing build-range-ring. When I first installed Forged Alliance (before getting FAF), it put a shortcut on my desktop....and that "non-FAF" shortcut is how I have been launching FA in skirmish/practice mode (or campaign mode). When I run FA from that shortcut, the version number in the upper right corner is (like I said) 1.5.3599. And I get no build-range-ring, ever. But I just got the idea to hunt around for another executable that might launch that 1.5.3622 version that I see when I kick off one of the replays from my FAF-initiated games. Sure enough, I found another executable in the \FAForever\bin\ directory. Eureka! I was able to get the orange build-range ring that way. I didn't realize that FAF contains a separate executable and that I am free to run either version from those two separate executables without re-patching. Possibly the reason I wasn't previously seeing the range-ring even in my FAF replays was that when I Ctrl-Alt-0 to turn it off again, it sometimes will not toggle back on. But sometimes it will. So I'll just leave it on and should be good-to-go.

And I guess it would be better to start doing my skirmish/build-order practice sessions with the FAF version, not the 3599 version.... since there are probably "a few" other important differences besides the range rings!

Glad you could find a good solution!

The more you play, the more the server will know about your skill, and the more the game will be balanced.

I bought the game a month ago through Amazon.com (not Steam version). When I play offline (Skirmish) against the AI, the version in the upper-right corner says 1.5.3599. When I play thru FAF, the version says 1.5.3622. (I have played eight multiplayer games now on FAF). Either way -- online or off -- there is no orange build range ring.

this is technically impossible

Go to the wiki to learn how the automatch works and why your first game might be unbalanced
or look this thread for general information
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=3058

you can go custom game if you dont feel good enough for ranked, you can also watch the tuturials (replays) in the link i just posted or talk to a trainer in the lobby or you can give up cause the game is difficult

wellcome to FAF btw

In fact I am about ready to give up on this game anyway...the FAF system no longer gives me the message that it is "learning" me, but it still pits me against players who are obviously much much more skilled at the game than I am. As if I were the only newb out there or something. And I've invested an awful lot of time studying the game, practicing starting build orders for different maps in Skirmish, watching replay casts (I actually enjoy watching those casts more than playing), etc.

If no UI mod should be required for the build-range-ring, then maybe it is a graphics glitch with the way the game runs on my system. The game does have two definite problems running on my system -- 1) the music and campaign-mode audio stutter, and 2) if I use Ctrl-V to go to Free Camera mode, when I hit "V" to return to "regular" mode, the graphics for unit life-bars, unit type etc. are gone and will not return until I restart the map/game. My system is pretty strong -- an Intel i7 quad-core 3.4 GHz CPU, 8 gigs RAM, Radeon video card (albeit a low-end Radeon), Windows 7 64-bit.

Build range is 10, fire range is 22. The whole building doesn't have to be within the range though.

I'm guessing you aren't playing a FAF game.

pip - I clicked on the "Strategic Overlay Menu" and checked every box, and toggled the Strategic overlay on...still no build range ring. I clicked on the "Economy overlay" button, and that didn't do it either...that just turned on a little box showing the mass/energy income for the ACU.

It seems like this would be a common easy-to-find bit of information, but surprisingly, it is not. I have searched literally for hours (really).

I searched this forum, but unfortunately when you enter search terms such as "build range rings", it comes back and tells you that two of the terms "range" and "build" were ignored...presumably because they are too common. Many of the searches I have done on this forum have been stymied by that same problem. The result of the search engine refusing key search terms is, you don't get a useful search result (other online forums I have belonged to have not had this limitation, BTW).

I searched the FAF Wiki, and found something that says to toggle the build range rings with Ctrl-Alt-numpad zero. But I tried that, and it doesn't do anything (with or without unit selected, cursor hovered over, numlock on/off, etc.). So I presume that some sort of UI mod is required? It doesn't say in the Wiki.

And I searched Google, and all I found was a long-ago UI mod for build range rings referenced on the GPG forum ("Range Checker v1.1")...but the download link for that is no longer available. I researched other common UI mods to see if they include this feature, and didn't come up with anything. Really getting frustrated....
