Being a noob I'm guessing spawn simply means repeatedly manufacturing the same unit or maybe same set of units?

You are mixing up "spawn" with "spam". Making a lot of something is "spam".

spawnpoints are where you gate in, so a 4v4 map would have 8 spawnpoints

Biass is right. A spawn point in the way I used it however is a bit more than only the spot where you gate in. I also inlcudes the starting ressources at that position. So the point is: even though the "Ultimate" maps offer up to 16 spawnpoints (i.e. games up to 8v8), you can play games with much less players, without having to worry about unused starting positions, since they are not or only partly created. So you can play these maps 1v1 (and you will have some 1v1 typical amount of mex) or 4v4 without having to change the map. It will just adapt to your needs. Furthermore the maps have some options that allow you to add additional stuff to your map (i.e. civilian bases, reclaim, adjustable mex number in some regions of the map...).

I guess I make a short tutorial video about how to use these maps (on the example of the most used map: wonder open). Stay tuned, I will post it here later (probably).

But the following extract I read under the (Whats New) tab this morning made me wonder if there was more to it?

"...Or a hydro? Or did you host a game and no one joins, so you want to start with fewer players, but the map has too many spawnpoints? ..."
