It's actually released. I never buy beta games. I actually don't even buy release games anymore after SupCom2 and probably not for along time after this.

I do the same, it is risky to buy game you can't try, so many fail games
It is better download and try, then buy, I did it with SupCom 2 and uninstall after few mission

I watched some videos about Elite, and I must say most time you spend in fast traveling, I never liked this tipe
freelancer has so cool traveling mechanic, I loved those jump gates and the cruise engine, sectors were full, intresting, not real of course but sometime realism is not good for gameplay

I currently watch for Starcitizen so I hope sectors will be similar to Freelancer

Being old enough to have played the first elite Im really interested in how this game goes. 40 quid for beta access is too rich for me. Waiting for some more reviews from non fanboi sources. Youtubes do look good but dunno how much of the boring stuff that is edited out. Anyone else played it yet??? gimmie your 2 cents worth.

I'm a bit puzzled by this new financing model.
First you build a game by "crowdsourcing" (investors who get no other returns than the product existing, that seems like charity to me), then get people to pay a high price to beta test your work in progress. Didn't they use to pay testers in the past ?

If that works (seems to be working), congrats to the developpers really, not sure if that's a good thing for the overall quality of the games produced though.

There seem to people that like the game for what it is, but everybody who wants to buy it i would reccomend to have a look on it at a friend first if you have the chance or spend 1h looking gameplay videos and see what you are actually doing most of the time.

Better ships travel faster too.

It's a simulation and a MMO, fast travel is out of question.

Spoiler: show
Keyboard & yes

OK let me extrapolate this.

I so far played this game about two hours, which, I agree isn't alot after all. Yet games that manage to anoy me in such a short time, tend to usually be stupid even after longer playing them. Let's start with the main things that prevent me from instantly having fun with it:

-> Where is my autopilot from every other space game i enoyed?
-> Supercruise: Ok this is simply redicolous and it seems to be the main mechanic of the game, now i suppose this is from the original game or something, which i honestly never played because it was before my time and I'm not into retro c64 space sim gaming, so for me the thing that matters is: It sucks, because it intentionally wastes your time. It's basicly like fast travel in Dragon Age Origins, just that you have to stop in the right moment otherwise you lose a few minutes, and that it isn't fast travel. O.k. i get that you might get used to that stopping, but what the hell! This isn't super hexagon, this game (at least from what i thought) is not meant to anoy you it's meant to be fun whiche leads to the next thing
-> boring sektors, ok you might say w0000t didn't you see the stars or some asteroid belts? Well, yes i did, and yes the graphics are neat BUT the sectors are empty, i mean of course they are that "logical", but that doesn't make it good, it's one thing to feel lonely, but if you cant find anything "intressting" on your journeys then the loneliest univers may actually feel boring, and the supercruise basicly makes "instances" for every station, ofc they cannot make sinza, but why isnt this implemented like i.e. in freelaner with trading routes and travelspeed (no supercruise is nowhere near this mechanic, supercruise is essentially just an anoying fasttravel minigame)
-> fighting seems 08/15
-> exploring: since every planet/station/etc is essentially it's own instance i miss a real feel of exploring, i might aswell play spore
-> i consider the galaxymap poorly desinged and 100% unoverseeable (which i asume was kinda intentional, but that doesnt make it any better)

What i haven't done yet:
-> having had a deep look into the weapon system/mechanics (i expect it at least to live up to freelancer, better also to X-Series
-> having had a deeper look into trading system, but i asume it cant live up to X3 which is the state of art in that area
-> reading the news/backstory
-> things that make this game awesome and i dont know about

This is not a rant:
It isn't, it's an expression of initial disapointment because yet another space sim failed to fullfill my expectations, and i do have a bad feeling about star citizicen. X3TC/Albion (which would essentially be the same) is how old now? 5 years (?) Frelancer is 13 years old (!) and it'S still better than new sapce sims. Im simply sad. :cry:

Play X3:AP with Litcube (https://code.google.com/p/litcubesuniverse/wiki/Index, is still in heavy development) and then X3: Rebalance Mod (X3 Rebalance Mod). You will have something like 600 hours of gameplay until appear something good.

PS: I don't belive in millionaries alpha funding. A lot of money and no responsability is a combination for garbage.
