I played from China last February-March and I didn't need a VPN to connect to FAF. My pings were mostly horrible but usually I was using hotel wlan, had an apartment with some ok connection but they had too many new apartments in that area so connection to foreign places was horrible usually. I guess people have better Internet connections at big coastal cities. Managed to play ladder with quite little of lag, depending on opponents location. Playing through VPN was a serious no-go, as China great firewall blocks normal VPN connections, so you have to first have an SSH tunnel and then VPN on top of that.. pings went too high that way.

Lu_Xun always sounds like a Chinese name to me, either the name of a famous writer or a famous general during the three kingdoms period, it's surprised to know he don't know Chinese at all.

I have seen the chinese just using "t1" and "t2" etc for the most part and google translate can make up the rest some of the time.

They can do that right now.

On another note, now that we have discovered a decently sized community in China, we should see if there are any in South Korea and Japan.

How did you find out about the Chinese community?

Was recently thinking about whether SupCom is played in any Asian countries.
Guess I got my answer.

Pretty cool that they got their own FA community over there. Didn't expect it to be that big. (although 500 out of 1,4 billion is nothing)

Would be fantastic if we could enable them to join the FAF community.

Can you communicate with them, Lux?

There is no way to reduce ping.

They can only connect to FAF through VPN because of the great firewall of China.

This is huge guys. I wonder if potentially doubling the playerbase, and with the Chinese no less (Best gamers are the best, will knock Zock's socks off...) will be enough to persuade PilOt that setting FAF up with more servers to reduce ping to China, and getting someone to translate the project, is worthwhile...

But in all seriousness, if we can find some way to pull them in, that is a lot of potential new players. Ping doesn't tend to be too big an issue with ladder or small games, which it seems are the least populated ATM. Hopefully they play more than just Gap or Setons haha. In-game the language barrier doesn't matter much. All they need to know is 6 letters.

I suppose it is because of the poor pings, lack of Chinese language support in the lobby, and english only rule in aeolus.
