Your not going to fit a 3570k and a 7850 into £500 without compromising elsewhere. if I were you I would go for a high end core I3 (3225) or Amd 8320 build. For ram get 8gb of the cheapest 1333mhz Ram you can get. Ram speed makes a tiny difference to performance relative to to other components.

A 7850 would be a nice card in the budget.

Do not skimp on the power supply, if it blows up it can take out the entire pc with it. Get a decent brand like Seasonic.

You'll want a graphics card if you want to play MC or BF3. Also make sure you get a 64-bit OS to use 64-bit Java with MC. Check the benchmarks forum thread here to see what processors actually get you the best bang for your buck.

Seriously?
For one, I do NOT recommend an SSD for your budget.
You should go for an AMD for the CPU, they make very good medium/low end CPUs and are good for budget builds.
I believe you can get a tri-core CPU and have 50% chance to make it quad core. I believe it is £50
You should buy a graphics card, otherwise no BF3 for you. An onboard graphics card will not run 1600x900 with highest settings and no AA, this is simply wrong.

Hard drives arent noisy and slow, this isnt 1999.

I agree, dont cheap out on the PSU OR the motherboard.

Wait for haswell and use the on-chip graphics. 3770k on-chip graphics will run a 1600x900 lcd at the highest quality settings with no AA, but I haven't tried 1920x1080 yet. The haswell graphics should be twice as powerful than 3570/3770. Do not buy a hard drive. They are noisy and slow. I recommend Intel 520 series SSD of whatever size you can afford. They have a 5 year guarantee. They get faster as they get bigger. Use an external drive with usb3 if you need to store video etc. Don't cheap out on PSU.

Custom pc for £500/$785

So i'm building my first gaming pc and I have a moderately small budget to spend on it!
I need your help on reccomending bang for buck, (or pounds in my case) quality parts.
This pc will be specifically to play supcom, minecraft, maybe a bit of BF3, and hopefully Planetary annihilation

For £500/$785 i'm looking for...
-cpu (preferably intel but not limited to)
-gpu
-psu/power supply
-hard drive/HDD (no more than 1TB)
-RAM (preferably 1600mhz and no less than 8gb)
-cooling fan for cpu
-optical drive (DVD writer/reader)
-motherboard
and anything else i'll need apart from the case and other prepherals but i'm pretty sure there was something else.

Personally I was thinking about a radeon hd7850 & i5 3570k build but it was around £30 above budget. (scan.co.uk)
