You do need to have a Steam account (your own account, or if you have their permission, you can use someone else's Steam account). You need to buy a copy of Forged Alliance for that account. You follow the instructions in order to complete the Steam-linking process.

Then your FAF account is verified and you can use it on any computer.

The copyrighted material is the game files including the game .exe. There's no way to do it without that.

You can also make an anonymous steam account and buy a new copy of Forged Alliance. It's only $12, or it goes on sale for something like $2.49 from time to time. Then you don't have to use your existing CD key. You can probably find a payment method to complete the purchase anonymously. I don't know all of the ways steam takes payment but you can probably figure one out that wouldn't lead back to you.

is there any activity on trying to get non-steam users onboard again?
I would make an anonymous steam account, yet if i put in my cdkey, that anonymity would be compromised. Is there any hope?

What exactly was the copyrighted material that was distributed to make Steam neccessary?
