I understand that it's very inconvenient for some users to steam-link. This requirement was certainly not designed to create barriers to FAF and frustrate users - it's there because the continued existence of FAF depends on it. It's our sincere desire for players to be able to log into FAF and play with minimal effort, and we are doing our best to assist users who have been unable to steam-link for whatever reason.

If a user loses their copy we can only offer advice on how they may recover it. Because steam-linking requires legit copies of the game, If you cannot recover your product-key there is simply no solution except to obtain another one.

Please contact me or another moderator for assistance with Steam-linking, or any other concerns.

I would be very interested to know, how many players are you going to lose with this requirement ?

Did you receive any mail/email from the current copyright owner of Supreme Commander Forged Alliance?

FAF is distributing copyrighted components to the users, not the other way round. Everytime you load a patch (and you need to do this at least once to play) you download the ForgedAlliance.exe and a bunch of other files that we slightly modified.

The general solution is to send only the difference between the original file and the file FAF needs you to have. I am working on such a solution but it is very complicated as we have to cover multiple retail versions as the source, multiple branches (faf, fafdevelop, fafbeta, coop and other featured mods), or new files that suddenly need access to the base version again.

Don't expect it anytime soon. (We have to many soon™ projects.)

In this link above there is written:
"The mandatory steam link will stay in place until no copyright protected assets are being distributed."

Does it mean that mandatory connection would not be required soon?
I have a legal version of the game and i'm not sharing any copyrighted components.

You don't need to install steam, you can do everything over the website. You just need an account with FA. And dont forget to make your game library public (you can make it private again afterwards.)

I'm in the exact same case, I bought this game a long time ago, it's been installed for years on this computer, I do not use steam at all, FAF is the only game I play, I have over 5000 games of FAForever, and now for some reason I'm not allowed to play this game on FAForever without installing Steam (that I have no use for), and potentially buy a new copy of the game.

Can someone explain ?

It is too long for serial number: 8 signs - 4 - 4 - 4 - 12.
Second one called "key" is also invalid.

I've checked. There is nothing over there. I mean - there is a lot of "stuff" but no keys. It would be too easy to steal them.

You can try find your old key at system registry.
Open in windows - start - find programms or files >type there- regedit
(but take care for nothing to change there)
press at keyboard ctrl+f keys, and type at search field - supreme commander
after you must press F3 key till to see installation directory, and KEY field near(20 symbols must be).
Probably so
