I dug up some more, you're going to love the detailed explanation.

See, the official client tries to calculate the unique ID before login and if it fails, the client pops up an error message and doesn't initiate the login. Downlord's client, however, does not check if the uid was calculated correctly and just sends whatever it gives back (in case it failed, it's empty). Normally the server would try to read the ID, fail it and tell you you're a bad person, UNLESS you've linked your account to Steam, in which case it doesn't check the ID you sent at all.

In other words, the faf-uid.exe still doesn't work on your machine, but the alpha client works because it doesn't check for mistakes, and the server doesn't care for it because your account is most likely linked to Steam.

This is interesting. I checked the code, and I'll get confirmation from the other client dev, but it seems it runs the exact same executable. You can try locating the faf-uid.exe in the alpha client and running the test command (with the directory of faf-uid.exe as the one opened in explorer) if you feel like testing why it works now.

so just to comfirm, i am screwed. Just tried the alpha download, and it works i can login and see the custom matches download mods etc i am guessing that runs from a different system?

Okay, I can see what's going on now.

The executable uses something on Windows called a 'WMI' service. The client code is making sure this service is running before it calls faf-uid.exe. Now, googling the error code along with 'wmi' suggests that this service is missing or broken on your Windows.

I'm not an expert on Windows, so I can't give you much more advice - only that the problem is with a broken Windows service. Googling '0x80040154 wmi' for solutions might be a good next step.

Nevermind, it seems I botched the command - I'm not used to Windows console. Could you repeat the previous steps but this time, run:

Code:: faf-uid.exe banana > %userprofile%\Desktop\faf-uid.log 2>&1

instead?

Yeah, that's weird - it means the uid executable isn't logging any errors, but it's still failing. I'll look at the code and see in what cases it's possible.
