I'm having the same black screen problem.

I don't have Lobby Manager. I deleted all mods from Documents\My Games\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\Mods without effect.

To anyone that experiences this, take note that if you are running Lobby Manager, it breaks. Remove Lobby manager. This can be another cause for black screen of death when joining/hosting a lobby.

Looks like the client was passing stupidly formatted options to the game. Made the lobby tolerant of this particular flavour of retardedness from the client:
