Problem Solved.

He had forwarded a port on his router, but also enabled UPnP.

Disabling the port forward on his router appeared to sort everything out

So we've searched the wiki and the forum and can't see anyone else with this issue.

A friend of mine is trying to get FAF going.

When he starts the lobby, and goes to the "custom games" tab, none of the lists are populated (neither the list of mods on the left, nor the joinable games on the right)

If he waits for quite a long time, he sometimes gets a list of mods that is a subset of what my client shows, and sometimes a list of games, but never the game that I'm trying to create for him.

When he sometimes gets the "Forged Alliance Forever" mod in the custom games list on the left side of the screen, I get him to double click it to try and host a game. He can fill out the FAF lobby "create new game" dialog, but when the clicks to start hosting, the dialog closes but the game is not opened.

We have tested running the game directly and it works fine.
