Basically, as Zep suggested it's a driver issue and the solution is to update the Realtek High Definition Audio drivers to the latest version (27/09/2013 currently).

It's difficult to play FA without sound (and less fun).
Restarting the computer fixes it for 1 game max. I am on windows 8.
Another guy in #aeolus called Spartan82 is also having this problem.

I heard the first few shots, but then nothing even as I tried over and over. -In a gw game attacking the seraphim, I heard a few thaam shots when engaging the enemy, and then nothing. -I just killed an aeon commander and the ACU explosion was silent, but when the "score" button dropped down from the top of the screen, I heard that.
