Friends list depopulated

I logged in today only to see my friends section with no one in it. While i suppose there are times like that i did notice a few people who had been on the list at the top of just normal users in grey. i looked through the list and found about 6 people who had been on my friends list. I have no idea how many were removed from my friend status but i can only assume the whole list depopulated. any ideas? I have been able to readd but not only is this a pain but i could of been removed from their lists ect...
