My exact fix was:
(windows 7)
-uninstall/reinstall FAF
-Turn off firewall
-run FAF in administrator

I think all you need to do is run it in administrator mode though. To do this, right-click the Forged Alliance Forever icon and select "run as administrator". Depending on your security settings, you will likely have to click "yes" in a dialogue box to confirm.
