It's unnecessary and potentially not safe.

As admin, the lobby has the right to modify anything it want on your PC.
A bug could erase your original FA installation or worst (but it's unlikely).

As a general rule, you should be cautious and suspicious with programs requesting admin rights. There is no good reason they should unless they are using a special network driver (like wireshark) or something like that.
That's probably the best "anti-virus" you can run

Nope, AFAIK the only changes I was making when everything went horribly wrong, was to do with running FA in windowed mode to try to get around the dual monitor crashes when running FA from FAF. I didn't change anything on windows. What're the drawbacks to running lobby in admin mode?

You shouldn't have to run the lobby in admin mode.
This is in fact very, very bad.

But you probably changed something that you shouldn't that make it mandatory. Maybe a UAC setting ?

Set "C:\Program Files (x86)\Forged Alliance Forever\FAForever.exe" to run as administrator.

How the hell did that happen though. No matter. I'm back! I thought I was going to have to rebuild PC.

Well something is still not allowing FAF to spawn a FA process. Can be a permission problem.

As far as I can see it looks the same in terms of log output, processes and behaviour. There's a reference to forged alliance in the logs (but there was previously, i.e. before AVG uninstall).

I uninstalled AVG, restarted machine, ensured windows firewall wasn't activated, and then tried to join a game via FAF.

Same result.

So I think we can rule out anti-virus as a factor at this stage.

Search this forum, some people had the same problem, but it was often related to an antivirus acting up.

I added C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin\ForgedAlliance.exe as an exception into AV. Same result.

When I disable AVG, same result. So I dunno.

I haven't changed anything in AVG prior to this issue starting.

I was trying out dual screen (full window spanning both monitors) when this started. Because dual monitor was causing intermittent crashes in FAF (not vanilla FA).

Don't touch anything.

It means that the FA that FAF is using works properly.

So something is making FAF unable to launch a process. Probably an antivirus of some kind.

Tis brings me to the directory:
C:\ProgramData\FAForever\

In here there is a bin directory with ForgedAlliance.exe.

ForgedAlliance.exe runs when launched directly from there.

Is this the wrong path for the exe?

There is.

Use "show logs" in the lobby. It will open an explorer. Go to bin, try launching the forgedalliance.exe directly.
