I've got a 2500K on my workdays-computer and an E8400 (currently @ stock) on my week-end PC. On neither I'm ever the bottleneck. At worst I'm running +0 on a fully loaded, long 4 v 4 Setons game on the E8400. But this winter... i'm gonna put back the 20% OC.

As long as you can run normal gamespeed it doesn't really matter you have the slowest either. What's bad is that there are too much people playing with a laptop that from time to time clocks down due to overheating. It gives on/off drops to -4 on some games...

So basically if or when picking a CPU for a gaming PC just look at the physics score on 3d Mark. Many older processors will keep up or be close to the newer processors (clock for clock) however due to the newer manufacturing process usually the newer CPU will be using less power. There are other variables such as the PSU and the Mother board. Ambient temps etc etc

:geek:

Im keen to upgrade my PC. Im at the stage where I've read almost every review and forum and trolled ebay and pc part picker. For me power consumption is something I look at (performance per watt). The GPU will use more than the CPU, A rumor that Nvidia's new series, will all out perform the Titan and use upto 40% less power while under load.

I have been a huge fan of AMD and ATI (now AMD) and really the difference is negligible. But for the saving in processor the cost over 12months of usage will land me with a higher power bill (in aus they sting us 27c per KWatt hour). The other think I've noticed. Because Intel are leading the charge, the Mother board companies are packing the motherboards with so many features. 2014 will see most z87 MB with dual 512mb/s wifi, bluetooth 4.0. That makes the smart home ever closer, allowing us to link phones to pc, controll pc from phone or table etc (i know we've been able to do this for a while just easier now)

The re-occuring advice I get is buy the most expensive CPU you can afford match it with an above average MB, get the best ram you can afford (amount depends on usgage but 8gig is plenty for games.) If overclocking, Ram usually can be run at a higher voltage say 1.6v to get tighter timings or higher frequency or both depending how much you spend. Get and ssd set it up for cash or if you can afford a larger one, load games (usually the main games you play) directly onto it.
Get a water cooler, if over clocking above 30%
Usually a 650W PSU is more than enough for the system and 1 GPU. While there is a debate over crossfire or 1 more expensive, more powerful GPU the crossfire will usually perform better but use more power to do so.

Get a sixer, wack it all together. Hide the receipts so the missus doesn't see, She will want jewelry if she sees how much you've spend :o

Hope this helps

Oh and you can have the best Gaming RIG still wont make you a better player

i have yet to see any AMD come any where near an oced 2500/2600k in simspeed

i have even seen 2600k a 4.9 beat 3930 @ 4.7ghz in sim speed

but FA can bring even the best cpu to it's knee -> http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd24 ... -43-53.jpg

Temp is 25 while idle and very rarely goes above 45 under stress

Then i found out there are two kinds of FPUs (floating point units): x87 and SSE2/3/4. I found benchmarks for both of them: AIDA64 SinJulia (x87 FPU) and AIDA64 Mantel (SSE2/3/4 FPU):

As you can see, the i5 3570k beats the FX-8350 with both benchmarks. Also, price/performance is better. So i've made my descision. Based on some information, not just by some dude screaming "buy the most expensive processor you can find", if you know what i mean.

I post this, because maybe I can help someone with this info. But, correct me if I'm wrong!

I have a 3570k with a cheapish aftermarket cooler and haven't found anything games wise that stretches it yet, I'm running a modest OC at 4Ghz and it runs between 27 and 33C so reckon you could get 4.4Ghz or so if you needed the performance. Certainly overkill for supcom.

Ideally one would need a quad core CPU with 1 core a lot faster than the other 3 :-). I also remember that going from E6600 to Q6600 (same CPU cores, same frequency, except Q6600 has 4 cores) helped a ton.

Everything I've heard about modern AMD CPUs has been uninspiring at best. So on that basis, get the newer Intel i5 and you'll be laughing.
