i think i have found the problem.

you were almost right, but it was not my ISP/router/network, but my anti virus program (avast free antivirus 7 - it is wrongly certified for win8), which also caused problems with watching/downloading 720p or 1080p videos on the internet...

it took me about 2 days and 3 installs of win8 to figure this out.

Yes. It has nothing to do with your hardware. Your ISP (or any router between you and the server) can have a (temporary) failure at any time.

until 2 days ago, i had win7 on my computer and faf worked perfectly.

the network, the ISP, the router and the hardware is the same. the only thing that i changed was the operating system.

can it still be a routing problem?

Probably a problem in the routing. Search the forum about it, a german provider had some problems a while ago.

This is not related to FAF and I can't do anything.

i am still having problems with faf. sometimes when starting faf it does not connect to the faf server at all. sometimes it needs about 2 minutes to do that and sometimes it works perfectly (like in win7)-

right now it seems to work, but i only see users from the us online (i am from germany). all other users are grey. i cannot host a server, because i do not see the any button to click on. i do not see any custom game as well.

so there seem to be still some bugs for faf in windows 8. that is all i want to say.
i can wait until it gets fixed (like next year)...

furthermore it seems to work occasionally in win7 and win xp compatibility mode.

Windows 8 is not the problem, I used FAF on 8 consumer preview as well as on the 8 RTM. No problems at all.

i just had the same problem.

i installed win8 and wanted to install faf. here is what problems i have encountered:

- first i tried to install version 586 --> disk1.cab problem. damn. i tried this a couple of times with insalling .net framework 2 and 3 (4 is already preinstalled in win8). no success.
- then i tried to install version 570 --> this installed without problems, then i logged in and had to download version 586 --> download error. damn.
- after that i tried to install version 584 --> this went well. after loggin in i had to download version 586 --> amazingly this went great!!!
- i thought my problems were solved. then i logged in. this went well. after that faf froze (no loading of player names). i did try this three times and restarted my computer in between. after the third time it finally worked.

this is strange.

well clean computer all new download, tried faf but........... same disk1.cab message! Downloaded Steam SC FA but no difference. Tried IE tried FFox tried Opera web browsers to dl but all the same.

Is there any other download method I can use?

Maybe you can try cc cleaner before having to reinstall everything.

The answer is a resounding YES. The game is hard disk purchased from store and used for years on GPG and faf.

I am going to have to do another re format and windows install as my pc is now bugged by switching the av off and trying to fix the registry.........

Are you sure that your copy of FA is legitimate?

If the answer is anything other than an enthusiastic "yes!", then download it from Steam and try again. Just want to eliminate that as a possibility.

Now i am bemused!!! I re formatted my computer hard drive, re installing windows only and hey i downloaded FAF and !!!
Yipee i thought all is now OK.

OH no, how wrong can I be? tried to connect this evening and a pop up saying I need to DL an update and hey presto the same ol problem.... disk1.cab file etc.

Tell me how can I be connected earlier without need for update and now need one but cant complete DL?

The only difference between this morning and now is that i have reinstalled anti virus. I had disabled it prior to DL just in case but no difference.

Please help
