All this talk about rating, or boasting about one's skill is largely irrelevant and out of touch with reality.
Numbers are relentless. So now face the bitter relaity:
Only 250 players are above 1200.
Players actually in the middle of ratings are about 200-250.
And real noobs about -400 to -500.

Trying to make things nicer than they are, based on the
Antiquated belief that all players begin as average at
1500 or 1600 is hilarious at least.

There is some protection for new players, in fact much better than gpg.
There you could actually be 200 and be matched with 2000. We don't have this
In FAF. Some tolerance more, would be good though.

Some misconceptions; first of all your displayed rating is the worst possible rating. It means the system is 99,71% sure you're at least better than that.
As for some interesting data, the average worst possible (displayed) rating is about 650 orso. (Based on players with more than 50 games)

As a trainer I've noticed there are 3 levels of gameplay (yes this shows 5 but two are transitions)
0-1000 -> low level of gameplay, learning how to do things, getting the feeling for the game
1.1k-1.3K -> Transition period. This is kind of where people decide if they want to play competitively or just for fun
1.3k-1.6k -> Average Joe level of gameplay. These people are really starting to get the game down. They can EASILY beat anyone in the the transition or newbie level, and can stand up against pros, but still lose to them
1.6k+ Mostly pros, really good and can crush anyone below them

LOL yeah, most of the 2k + I've seen are pretty relaxed. Even quiet during the game.

and you can go up the latter very quick (in fact, in the beginning the fastest, then it comes to a stop)

what anywhere happens is, that one black sheep under 100 white can ruin your day..

and what i also learned to ignore is that: go there (ping, ping) "what the heck are you doing NOOB? move here move there. blabla.."

ok, many times they give you also valuable information.

and what is on the top of my "dislike" list is:

you are playing on a noob game and the server says so "NOOB 400-800".
inside the game come also 900 and sometimes 1000 rated ppl.
no prob for the most.
BUT when in game they are starting to yell "NOOOOOB! idiot. why do you ##**@@@ do this and that"
i am not sure why they joined the game... maybe they can not read?!

0 - 700 rating: LOL NOOB / I HOPE YOU DIE TO [enter desease here] SMURF.

800 - 1100 rating: make x or y you inferior slave / lol this dude clearly stopped progressing even after a million games.

1200 - 1500 rating: I once won a game in non comparable situation by doing non comparable stuff, L2P you pig.

1500 + rating: Lower ranked players just tolerate your incompetence because you're understanding the game on such a deep level, at least that's what you make them believe. Higher or similar level players will blame you for any failure in a passive agressive manner.

There has been a few negative instances where people don't treat you well because of your lack of skill but I've put that down to the people involved being a bit immature, not really a fault of the system :-)

For my part, I can't understand why you'd want to play against really good players all the time. I don't personally enjoy getting consistently demolished, I'd rather maintain a nice 1:1 ratio for wins / losses so I don't get demoralized!

Like the others said just do more hosting yourself, join a clan and train with better players when you get the oppertunity and don't join games which exclude your rating (unless someone invites you!) :-)

From my perspective, FAF is welcoming beginners a looot. It's probably the largest portion of games being played, at least it's my feeling.
Never saw actually figures of games # where median rating was below 1.2k.

Worst case, just host your own "all welcome" and that's it. It should even fill much faster than the higher rated games ;)
