Yeah those props are great. Are they just a 2d image? We could make a mod to show veterency and upgardes.

Would it have to be a sim mod?

I understand your points about UV meshes

they are 3d images

However an alternative is to use props to denote the status or rank of a unit, such as shown in the video below...

Note: this is the 4DC / DMS leach field in action!

This can be used for anything you want from a players rank to special Easter eggs for players who've won tournaments ect...

here is something i made, not because i think it's great, but just to learn how to do it.

Image

(red eyes, rainbow body, artwork on gun and legs)

it would take a long long time, but I think I could make a pretty sweet looking skin that still fits in with the look and feel of FA - much better than my example here

it wouldn't be ui thing because you need to change the blueprint of one acu from icon1 to icon2

if the second player didnt do that as well then there would be a desync - blueprints are different.

however player2 can just have icons 1 and 2 and they happen to look exactly the same. So the change to the blueprint would be identical (preventing desync) but the images would appear differently.

Vodka, I can always skin an ACU to look like a Smirnoff bottle if that floats your boat or are you a fuzz-navel kinda guy?

Look, I'm not trying to step on any toes and I'm sorry if I did.

I just don't want to see this game changed more than absolutely necessary. If people want to run fancy graphics mods fine - make pink mantis shooting confetti - but don't force it as part of the game. There have already been so many changes since GPG days and looking from that perspective I'm not too fond of a number of them. It's a slippery slope.

Strategic icons is a UI thing so it can be user based. Maybe have someone make a mod that includes these Icon enhancements if they want them.

Imho we should not have to do such things. It's a strategic game, with a strategic view. We should know which enemy we are fighting with a simple glance. Like it is for normal units.
Currently the way it's done, it's the same thing as if we had the same icons for all units, with just subtle 3D model differences, and we had to zoom in, or wait for it to attack before knowing which type of unit we face.

But that's not the point of this thread :)

I was asking a similar thing, being capable of seeing which part of ACU was upgraded with icon (or any UI part). I find it cumbersome currently, but somehow old players seems used to deduce from ACU effect in field, or from zooming in and checking the little white light of the upgrade animation. :?

Anyway don't forget that there are mod that overide the strategic icons, like the brilliant ASI /viewtopic.php?f=41&t=2740
