It's dead because forum message boards are not efficient in storing and sharing information. The old threads get buried deep and no one wants to become a human "Google" to search a messy wiki, either.

I'd love to take a shot at mapping but screw me if I have spare time to piece everything together well.

hmu if you need any help, if you decide to start xD

The problem with that is that it would be just like the forum for mapping;

Dead.

I like this idea, why crawl though the map vault yourself when you can have someone else do it  . In general if you have some "smallish" idea like that , but cant code it you can always open a "issue" ( in this case a suggestion) on github and hope some coder will have a look ( ofc this also depends on how difficult it is). Atleast the chances of it getting implemented are way higher then on a forum post.

Regarding the wiki stuff, i tried to create a wiki account as well (pre server change) and havent heard anything since. Admittedly i didnt pursue it any further whatsoever  .

i'm not sure if there is a need for a mapping councilor, i cant think of much stuff that this councilor would do. Based on that it could be added to another councilors tasks or a new mapping/modding/coop/featured mods councilor could be made. ( if this doesnt exist already, i dont really know what the current council seats are )

PS: maybe a #mapping irc channel ?

I can't update the "how-to" section to reference my initial tutorial on hot-build-keys, etc.

Same as better What's new page where maps could be promoted better than current one post and disapear forever. Again, coding... and we know how it is with coding. If you want something done, do it yourself.

Else finishing the tutorial on wiki I rewrote and updated to fit for FAF needs... no one touched it since that...
Also some could add how to work in world machine or something for better heightmap. Rest of the editor features, like editing water and many other things that are not mentioned there.
But I guess if I don't add them, no one will since contribution to wiki is more than poor.

What excatly would be a task for that councilor? Make maps? ...

EDIT: First and foremost, are you against the idea of having a mapping council? It doesn't have a 100%-guarantee to work out but Kal and I worked on the WWPC quite a bit with the other Tournament Directors. The closed group made it easier to identify individuals with useful input/feedback rather open it up to the message boards where there is always a flood of oft-over-opinionated discussion that lead no where. I firmly believe that assigning smaller groups helps progress stay stable. If people don't like the folks working on things they can voice it there.

Original post:

1) Best practices
2) Filter through custom-made maps and identify ones that should be considered for 1v1/team games
3) Maybe do vid or write tutorials on how to accomplish difficult tasks in mapping
4) PROMOTE the creation of new content give us something fresh in the community

In general, it would be someone that motivates and guides stimulation for creativity that gives us more maps to play. I was blown away by Iszh's recent creation "Anchor" and am hoping more like it are created.

I for one will be hosting team games with Anchor as much as possible moving forward. It may take awhile to fill, but it's nice to see something besides Wonder/Pyramid/Tabula/Canis/Hilly.

"Mapping council"

Vote #1 biass for map cancerlor :D 8-)

On a serious note, not sure about other people specifically but from my experience a lot of 'mappers' keep in touch with each-other quite a bit, im not saying do not consider Morax's suggestion, im saying that maybe adding the title to that section of the community is a whole lot easier then some might think :D It can also be given its own section do place requests and etc, seeing that mapping thread is definitely a ghost town except for a few people updating their map threads

TL;DR Agreeing with morax^
