So there will be a transition and it seems close to my idea to give it into the hands of someone with experience.

Some statements from Ze_Pilot in the chat 2 minutes ago:

I'm really done
but someone will take care of the whole project
meaning the server, domain name, lobby & server code,...
I will help for the transition for the next few months
during that time, I will also work on make the server code readable
no good can come from giving my code in the current statre
it's 40000 lines of undocumented code
so I will document them
of course that include GW code (that I would have released either way)
because again, it's not me being a dictator

And another big Thank You! If you weren't male i would kiss you.

The next step would be the planning. Then you can start the server code from scratch.

There are so many things that need planning / specification / documentation. The server consists of many parts:

- Authentification
- Games
- Messenger
- Maps
- Mods
- Replays
- Tourneys
- Proxy
- Updates
- Voice Chat

- Webserver( Website, Forum, UnitDB)
- Source Code Repository and Management

And much more.

So to reimplement all this, well it's a hell lot of work. We need someone with enough time to lead a team of developers. Someone who has the experience. Perhaps we could look at other OpenSource projects. They have been gone through the same problems we will face. I am a programmer with zero team/project experience. But i know without a real team leader there will never be a mature alternative to FAF.

But whats the point to reimplement all this? Without the right overall aim we will be at the exact same point as we are now or worse.
So what are these overall aims? I will tell you what i think sould be the aims of this community.

- forged alliance FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER with one GREAT community of kind players
- stable server structure with no downtime: a decentralised / centraliced structure ( a great point of discussion)
- how are the people selected which are in charge?

Now my fifty cents:

There is a saying in germany: "Now the child is fallen into the well." I think it fits in this situation. I think FAF has similar Problems like OpenSSL. Everyone use it, but it's an evolved project almost impossible to get into the source code. So like Ze_Pilot said, starting from scratch would be easier than trying to get into it. I would like to see FAF running again. In parallel there should be started development on a new server basis from scratch. There have to be first a complete planning / specification. Than anyone can start his own implementation. But preferably there should be only one project. The most important part should be:

the specification of the server should imply no split of the community.

How to achieve that? Well that should have been the whole disussion and not all the crap posted leaving a great mess.
Is there any chance that FAF will be running again? If yes, i would like to suggest to post to this thread only ideas/specs - no complaining, no pointless personal critcism.

there are perhaps many ways one can accomplish a new structure but the most obvious would be one master server and many community/custom servers loosely connected to each other. Take a look at "openttd"

No time to write more now. Later perhaps...
