I had one thought about the sera torp bombers. What if we kept the same behavior that causes them to hit the seabed in shallow waters, but made them do more damage so that in open sea when the torpedos don't run into the seabed they have more dps than other torp bombers?

1.) Torp bombers are another one of those units that are so (seemingly) identical across factions as to be really boring. This would actually make some legit faction diversity.

2.) I might not appreciate the nuance, but other than some kind of nice transports sera airforce seems really blah. This would at least allow some situation in which sera airforce would be particularly good (naval map with deep water).

3.) This would be easier to do than a more complicated fix.

Dat 3d shading. BTW antitorp does not work even if the target is under water. So for example if you have your acu under water, then destros antitorp will not help you avoid snipe. Edit: actually it seems that some torp defs do work (e.g. aeon), but some don't (e.g. cybran).

What about the sera T2 torpedo pd anti torps ? I was always spamming those near ACU in phantom games to help defend solace snipes ...

The thing is, whenever you include aeon ships in the battle, the solace depth charges are actually being hit by the torpedoes and the anti torpedo torpedoes, making them less efficient.

I know this hasn't got anything to do with the original topic but I'd like to add it to the torpedo defence comment.

EDIT : I sboxed it. Indeed I never realized the cybran and uef torps were behaving like that :o . 5 years and still noob :).

But regarding the sera torps, true some of the torps get stopped by anti torp defense, but some torps really hit the void, at least when the destroyer runs away.

The behaviour of the sera torps should be amended so that it becomes competitive with the other factions.

Sure faction diversity is good, but having a weapon that simply doesn't work in some situations is weird.

Yes thats what i meant in my post, some torps dont even hit the water or barely and would probaby even hit a ship on the land or near cliffs.

I think if the sera torpedo goes too deep and hit the seabed it is destroyed like any projectile in the game ?

Check this quick 5 minutes sandbox replay it demonstrates it pretty well : http://faforever.com/faf/vault/replay_vault/replay.php?id=2609967

Aeon even worse than sera in my test, but maybe we can find a test case where all aeon torps T2 hits and all sera miss idk.

sorry what ? not dropping into the water ?

But besides, I will try again tonight, but I'm sure sera torps miss and not because of the antitorps. Visually they seem to hit the void :D
The only torpedo bomber that shouldn't be affected by antitorps are aeon, because they use anti depth charges.

Besides I am hardly the only one who noticed that something is severely wrong.

Other torpedobombers ignore antitorpedo, because they don't drop into the water (cybran and uef), or use depth charges and no torpedos (aeon).

Because of that, aeon and sera also don't work in shallow water, while cybran and uef do.

If it needs to be "fixed" is another question, but it is rather irrelevant since it doesn't look like there will be another balance patch any time soon.

For the lolz try to kill a fleet of running cybran destros with sera torps. I'd agree that its a hardly the best move in the first place, but other torps behave decently.
Sera torps are useless crap.

The issue is the bomb drops the torpedo a few meters away from the target, very deep, then it starts an ascending trajectory from sea bottom towards the ship hull. The issue is when the unit is near shore or in not deep enough water. Maybe middle lake in canis river is a good example of a place where you couldn't use sera torps ? (not sure at all about this, since i haven't done any testing).

Other bombers seem to drop the torpedo directly into the ship from the air (more like T1 bombers), or at least they stay near water surface (aeon T3 torp)
